About Kids Health

Lonnie Said:

I need to teach kids about health, safety and nutrition?

We Answered:

nutrition- you can bring in play food that has to do with the pyramid (i would also bring in a cut-out pyramid) help them match where the food goes on the pyramid. explain that you need certain amounts of this food per day in order for your body to grow big and strong.

safety- with younger ones; i do units on street lights, wearing a helmet as well as not talking to strangers.

health- bring in a doll or something explaining main body parts and tell them by playing outstide, doing sports and being active helps your body live longer and stronger. then play a game with them (even an easy one like duck, duck, goose!)

Steven Said:

I have to come up with an activity for little kids in either health, safety, or nutrition?

We Answered:

Safety:
Find a movie about the dangers of talking to strangers. You can make up scenarios the kids and act it out in class. You could also talk about safely crossing the street. Bring in a bright orange vest, a whistle, and stop sign and pretend to be a traffic director. Demonstrate how the director would direct traffic and allow them to safely cross the street.

Health/Nutrition:
Make up a matching game. Bring in cards that have different fruits and veggies on one side and mix them up and make the kids match them up correctly. Teach the kids what each fruit or vegetable is before playing the game and add a twist to it by making them say the fruit or vegetable once they find the match. You can also time the game to make it a competition.

Warning: Don't bring in any food for the children to eat unless you get the OK from the parents first. Some students might be allergic. I'm deathly allergic to bananas. They make my throat swell up and I break out in hives. And my friend's allergic to the peach fuzz on peaches. It breaks her out in hives if she touches/rub the peaches for too long.

Who thinks questions about singing school kids about health care reform are going to start?

We Answered:

Singers run in my family.
Usually because they are being chased!

Do you think letting your kids eat junk food is bad parenting?

We Answered:

No, it is not "bad parenting" as such. Yes these Moms aren't doing their kids any favours but until the Governments of this world puts in place higher taxes on "junk food" to make it less available and ban the associated advertising then people will always buy junk food. I buy junk food now and again, the odd double cheeseburger flings itself at me and I can't resist.

Microwave meals are actually not that bad for you really, not as good as fresh food but I use them occasionally they are very useful to put in the freezer for days when I don't cook a proper meal.

When my kids were small (they are healthy happy teenagers now) I used to let them have the occasional McDonalds or similar "fast food" maybe once a week or once every 2 weeks, not every day. They were allowed to have a packet of crisps, a few biscuits and a chocolate bar most days too. Kids actually need around 2500 or more calories per day just for growing.

There is nothing wrong with giving kids sweets/chocolate as part of a balanced diet as long as it is not used as a reward for good behaviour, that is when "food issues" start and we as adults feel justified in rewarding ourselves with food (or an alcoholic drink) for doing well at work etc and the process of becoming over weight starts.
