exposure to rubella, which can cause deafness in the infant.

disease transmission to the infant, if the mother has gonorrhoeae, chlamydia, syphillis, HIV, or group B streptococcus (which is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis).

problems with the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic sack, which can cause preterm labor, inadequate blood supply, and various other problems.

It is not possible to rule out any mental health problem with prenatal tests. Downs Syndrome is not a mental health problem--it's a genetic problem, which is why they can test for it using your child's DNA.

You just need to relax and see a psychologist regularly to keep yourself in check. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your baby is. The baby won't be born with problems because of this, but the baby can develop problems as time goes on... especially if you keep stressing about stuff because your baby will pick up on your stress.

You can't control everything. Period. Make sure you're seeing your psychologist regularly--it's the only way you can help yourself, and in turn, help your baby.

I feel sad for the baby, and from my perspective of, as you know, a mother who has lost a young child to cancer, my immediate reaction is heartbreak for the mother and the father, and sorrow for what the child may lose. But I also have respect for the emotional and spiritual resiliency of sick kids- they tend to be stronger than we are.
I can't say I feel happy that my baby doesn't have to go through it, more accurately I would say I feel grateful that at the moment there is nothing insurmountable facing my children, and I say a quick prayer that G-d willing none of my surviving children will face anything larger than us.
