California Child Health Insurance

Lori Said:

Can you get ssi for a child or teenager (in california) who has been diagnosed with adhd?

We Answered:

SSI is a FEDERAL organization--you go to the Social Security Administration to apply--it could take some time before they let you know if you are accepted.

I hope that your Medicaid (Cal) application has been filed for a while--it takes 30-45 days to process in most cases. Yes, the SSI can also apply you for Medi-Cal, but you're better off if you go to the MediCal office and get that application in--fast.

You can bring your son to the free or sliding-scale mental health clinic to get his med and counseling. If you don't know where the clinic is--call your local emergency room or police department--and ask for the phone number.

Considering that you are unemployed, you should be applying for Unemployment Insurance--and you will also be eligible for Medi-Cal and food stamps.

All you need to do is get to these places and get your applications in.

Child Support in California?

We Answered:

i believe you would get more than $350/mo although i don't know what the guidelines for c.s. are in californina. you CAN find that out online - department of revenue, child support for your state.
anyhow, it is good to have since they help enforce it too - just in case your son's father decides not to pay at all - when he should be helping to support his son until he is emancipated.
it takes a lot to raise a child - especially through high school..then possibly college.
child support is based on what your ex earns - and he will need to claim his cash earnings too.
or face jail time?
ROUGH figures: if he is working a 40 hr wk, making $15/hr X 30% - he will end up paying at least TWICE what he is paying now..
i would suggest to him that he should be happy giving the child $100 a week that you are asking.
it's the child that suffers when their parents don't do the right thing.

Mathew Said:

Calif.-if my new job does not offer hlth benefits (medcl, dntal, vision),do I have 2 get my chld hlth insurance?

We Answered:

{THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE!!}

I just poured through the California law regarding insurance, and didn't find any statutes that state any requirement for children to be insured (some states do have that requirement). Now, given that you and the mom have to pay 50% of the medical bills, it would be much cheaper in the long run to have some type of insurance (for example, go and try and get a broken leg fixed without insurance. It will cost an arm and a leg, no pun intended).

I found a lot of references to something called Medi-Cal, which is no cost insurance. If you don't have any health insurance, even if you don't qualify, your kid would/should under the program.

Discuss It!
