Child Abuse Health

Ronald Said:

in studys it says that woman that were victims of child abuse spend more money on health care in adulthood y?

We Answered:

Women who were victims of child abuse tend to develop mental and emotional issues, which requires health care, which is by definition expensive.

Viola Said:

child abuse?

We Answered:

You don't know what is really happening for sure, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

Maybe he plays rough.

I am a girl but when I was little my legs always had cuts and bruises. My arms would have bruises, my brother who is 5 years younger went through a biting stage.
And my brother and I would fight so I would occasionally have cuts or bruises on my face.

Just say something like " What a little roughhouser you are, where'd you get all those battle wounds dude"

Just play it off cool, if he weirds out on ya, you know something is wrong but if he doesn't you know he plays a bit rough.

I am 18 now and I play co-ed soccer and some of the guys can get a little rough. I have bruises all over my knees and cleat marks on my thighs. It totally looks like im abused which I am lol just abused by the lovely sport of soccer/

Mae Said:

Is it child abuse to not provide health insurance for your child?

We Answered:

I would differentiate between "abuse" and "neglect". To me, abuse is the willful infliction of harm. Neglect is the failure to avert harm.

Within that context, to not provide health insurance is to greatly increase the likelihood of neglect. Naturally, the follow-up question is to consider how someone concerned for the welfare of a child should act. Caution should be employed in such activities. There are knee-jerk reactions in the name of helping children that I believe may actually harm many of them.

Teresa Said:

Mandatory reporting of abuse of child during mental health session?

We Answered:

Exceptions to Confidentiality

In Mass. law, there are several exceptions to the confidentiality of psychotherapy (see the details of these laws, below).

Three of these exceptions to confidentiality concern harm to self or others:

Where there is a reasonable suspicion of child abuse or elder adult physical abuse;

Where there is a reasonable suspicion that you may present a danger of violence to others;

Where there is a reasonable suspicion that you are likely to harm yourself unless protective measures are taken.

In all of the above cases, the psychotherapist is either allowed or required by law to break confidentiality in order to protect you, or someone you might endanger, from harm.

Vivian Said:

If you are a health professional and you suspect child abuse, can you hold the child from their parents?

We Answered:

No. You call the police (as required by law) and they handle it.

Melinda Said:

What disipline does Child Abuse fall under?

We Answered:

It cuts across a number of disciplines. Health practitioners are often at the front line of child abuse, especially physical abuse, as they see the results. Social Workers are often involved in investigating such abuse. Psychologists and social workers provide treatment for abuse victims. Psychologists also study the impact of trauma. So, I would say that it is difficult to put child abuse into a single category.
