Child And Family Health Nurse

Wilma Said:

My daughters terrible sleeping?

We Answered:

Babies aren't necessarily "supposed" to sleep through the night. I feel your pain though cos my ten month old still wakes every hour also, so I really have no advice, sorry! I think babies are all different. Apparently I was the same as a baby, if I got 20 mins sleep I was good for the night! They are learning so much and apparently this makes them wake. http://moxie.blogs.com/askmoxie/2006/02/…
I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing until my baby is ready to sleep the night.

Leon Said:

Nurse or Family & Consumer Science teacher?

We Answered:

Easy and enjoyable does not translate to a bigger bottom line. Professional nurses get paid based on what they do, not by who they can help. If you are looking for a steady pay check go into nursing, at least BSN/MSN degree and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Having a professional degree will give you a bump in the hiring pool and put you more in demand. Teaching FCS, is what it is you teach people about Consumer Science this is a totally different ball game than the health sciences, which are biology, math, and chemistry backed. When you need a blood transfusion, it is not important that you can sew a pillow correctly, rather you know which blood to get and how each is different and why.
Professional Nurses make more because it is in demand. I would trust that my anesthesiologist know which medications lower the state of concious rather than have the best cooking skills for red meats.
Depending on what you want to do, if you're in it for the money, or to teach you would have to make a decision on where you passions lie. You can teach in public schools, sure, but it will never pay six figures. Nursing on the other hand, depending on what you do with it can pay in the $20K mark all the way up to a Certif. Registered Nurse Anesthetist making $100K/year easy.

Tracy Said:

extended breastfeeding mothers?

We Answered:

I have no idea.

My 19.5mo is a terrified, shrieking, sobbing mess in the doctor's office. Her doctor is a relaxed older guy who doesn't force sobbing toddlers on scales. Only rarely do we get a weight, and we haven't had one for some months now.

He once had a resident following him around, and explained why he wasn't worried about my daughter's weight, pointing to various signs of robust good health (er, this included the carrying on)...

If there were no such things as scales and centile charts -- would you worry, does he have any outwards signs of ill health? If the answer is no, you should probably stop worrying.

My daughter is also breastfed and vegetarian. She self-fed from six months, I offer a good variety of healthy food at regular intervals without too much comment, and pay no attention when she ignores a meal.

Dr Jack Newman's book has an excellent section on breastfeeding, weight gain, and pediatricians' foolishness re. ditto...

edit: I did imply some insult towards pediatricians. ;-)
