Or, you could do what other countries -- Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, England, Denmark, etc have done -- and create a "universal health care" program which covers everyone with quality care (including choice of doctors; no HMO-type "referral" system!) and is subsidized through income taxes. And yes, the richer you are (the more money you make), the more you pay...which is how it should be.
Many people don't "choose" to be poor. (Even more don't choose to be sick or needing medical attention.) Through circumstance (broken families, abuse, inadequate or substandard education, limited intelligence and/ or capabilities) not everyone has the same opportunity to make big bucks. Not everyone on welfare is a "bum" (and if you check out welfare, I don't know how most people can really "live" on it either!).

They deny any culpability of the increase in social pathologies in spite of the fact that what they advocate is exactly what causes the problems.

About half of all children in the US live in a home in which the father is absent. There are two main reasons:

One, women have whatever responsibility they choose (from 0 to 100%) in deciding, unilaterally, whether to allow children to be born into a fatherless home. They may abandon the baby or keep it and demand someone else pay her for her unilateral choice. This covers approximately 30% of all current births in the US.

Two, in marriage, women can simply use the strong arm of the law to remove the father through no fault of his own, in fact, without any reason whatever and in any case, force him to pay for the 'privilege'. This covers approximately 80% of all divorces with children.

Both of these are directly tied to feminism and the creation of "rights without responsibility" for women and the socialist underpinnings that is feminism whereby everyone benefits from the hard work of a few.

Two solutions are obvious: one radical cutbacks in all types of welfare and many structural changes in the way it is doled out.
If we reward bad behavior, we can expect increased bad behavior. Make *all* parents equally responsible to, with equal rights for, their children.

The other is to repeal "no-fault divorce". When divorce is necessary, split custody without money changing hands between the parents as the default. When child support is necessary, it should be reasonable and based on costs.
