Nursing course ( Children Health )?

We Answered:

If you want to do the diploma in nursing you need 5 GCSE's at grade C minimum or above, must include Maths, English & Science. The diploma is being phased out though & won't be offered after 2012. Many uni's have already dropped it in favour of the degree.

If you want to do the degree you wil need the 5 GCSE's plus 3 A-levels. My uni is currently asking for BBB at A-level for nursing. Although you haven't got the 3 A-levels, your business degree should make up for it. There are mature student son my course who have got in with 2 A-levels & a previous degree.

However, many uni's require evidence of recent study. My uni asks for you to have studied in the last 3 years but some uni's stretch to 5 years. If you haven't studied in a while you can do an Access course at college that will get you back into the swing of studying. There is a user on here who will tell you that Access courses guarantee you a place on a nursing course. But they do not. They qualify you to apply, that's all.

You're not too late to apply because although UCAS's first deadline has passed, they do actually pass on late applications right up until June. It's at the uni's discretion if they consider you, but many do. However if you decide to do an Access course first then it's college you need to be applying to.

You might find the forum in this site useful. Lots of great advice about UCAS, applying, personal statements, interviews, bursaries etc. http://www.studentnurse.org.uk/

Your uni fees would be paid for you & you as already mentioned there is a bursary. The degree bursary is the one that is means tested so if you have a partner who works, you may find you don't get much bursary. I'm a single parent with one child living at home so I get roughly £750 a month.
