I'm here in Texas, and MY husband's employer still allows step children to be covered under THEIR group plan. If the employer dropped coverage for dependents, then it's possible to do this.

But if the child lives with you, AND the employer covers dependents, then I think there's a miscommunication somewhere. LOTS of stepkids are covered under a stepparents' insurance here in Texas. You just have to furnish proof that a. the child is YOURS and b. you're legally married to your husband.
