Child Health Safety

Dale Said:

Parents: What's more important, your child's safety or his/her health?

We Answered:

ummm. i would say they are both equally important. they do go hand in hand.

Johnnie Said:

What should all parents know about ensuring health and safety for their children?

We Answered:

Well first of all they should know what is good for their kids; healthy eating and exercise. They should also be able to identify common infections. Oh and what moles/ freckles need checking for skin cancer. Oh and they should have a basic medicines knowledge.
For safety I don't know how many know CPR or how to perform mouth to mouth properly. They should also know how to bandage, and how to disinfect any infections from cuts (before seeing the doctor)

Apart from that they just need the common sense of not leaving dangerous things in reach of small children, kitchen knives, hot irons, chemicals, etc,

My mum's a nurse so I'm pretty lucky I had all this.

Karl Said:

Why should adults working with children understand the importance of health and safety?

We Answered:

Because they have a legal requirement to do so. They have a duty of care when these children are in their care. Take the Heath and Safety Act and Management at Work Regs and apply it to a workplace in which there are children i.e a nursery / school. Cover issues such as leaving them unattended, COSH - letting them come into contact with harmful substances, welfare issues - such as food, toilet etc.

Tamara Said:

Are health & safety regulations holding childrens development and understanding of wildlife/countryside back?

We Answered:

It depends where they live and what their parents are like. When I was a youngster I lived near a few farms and spent many days wandering woods, climbing trees, swinging across the river on a rope, fishing, picking berries for my mums fruit pies and hunting rabbits. I still know people who let their kids do the same and those kids have character for it.

I actually feel sorry for the generation of people that don't know how to ride a horse, string a bow, catch a rabbit or even tie a half blood knot they are missing out on a slice of majesty.

So for the city kids that won't get to venture into the countryside outside of a school trip this is a real drawback, but for the country kids this is less of a problem. Having lived in the city and lived in the country I know I feel safer surrounded by trees and animals that want nothing to do with me than surrounded by CCTV and gangs that want my valuables.
