Child Mental Health Training

Brittany Said:

Mental health workers?

We Answered:

I know that I do. I thought I was having a hard time dealing with the countertransference because I was young. I was hoping that time and experience would help me deal with it better. In a way, gain some strength to be able to hear some of these children's stories. I mean, with some patients, having been where they are, makes it easier to help them. However, there are those, where I feel so helpless. I know I've been there and I know how they feel, but deep down I'm unsure if I've actually been able to overcome those struggles, so I feel like I can't help them. I'm not sure if anyone can. And then, there are those, with horrible stories, stories that as much as you tried, there is no way of knowing what it's like, it's unfathomable. All the hundreds of books that you've read, none of them prepare you for it. And you have this child in front of you, whose only hope for getting better is you. If you fail at helping them, you know odds are they'll lead a live without trust, full of unstable relationships, probably medicated forever, and they'll never be happy...

I've been told to appreciate that there are some whom you can help, and there will be other's that you can only try your best to help them, and then just hope for the best. I don't know, I don't have any answers. I myself had to take a break a short while ago also.

I guess, you have to be able to recognize your limits and well, recognize when it's time to take a break. You need to be able to take care of yourself, in order to be able to take care of others. However, if you can, go back and help a couple of others, because although there are many you can't help, those that you can help, if you're not there, they don't have anybody.

Probably wasn't much help, but I wish you the best! Take care! =)

How do you write a Monograph? Where do you start? I am writing for a social work class and it is my first one?

We Answered:

It may be a little late, but pick a subject that would allow for an easy lit review. Something with a lot of work done on it already. Create a position. State it and defend it. Having a subject with lots of citations makes those long papers easier.

Child trauma treatment ???

We Answered:

See if the national child traumatic stress network can offer any therapists in your area.

Trauma Focused - Cognitive Behavior Therapy has been used effectively with traumatized kids.

The saddest part about the whole thing is the system does not do well in investing in these kids until they are adults having significant trouble and possibly being a threat to themselves or others by them.

Good luck.

What Age Was Your Child Fully Potty Trained During The Day Hours? Please State the Sex Of Your Child As Well?

We Answered:

My son was "peepee trained" at 3 and "poopoo trained" by 4. So he was completely out of pullups by 4. I didn't try to push him, I knew he would do it on his own time. My family was a different story. When mom and dad visited they would harp on why he wasnt using the potty. I had to sit them down and tell them to back off, it created stress for my son, and it was quite obvious. My son has no helath conditions to speak of, unless stubborness counts for one!
Good luck.

Has anyone done training in social work?

We Answered:

Well I have my BSW with an LSW and in the area I live in I am having trouble fining work in my city but we are like that here with most professions anymore.

Social Work values often conflict with the values you learnd in psychology. I would suggest you select a program that will give you internship experience in the area you want to practice.

Social Work is usually not a high paying profession but with an MSW you should be able to make a good living
