Mental Health Issues

April Said:

Are you born with mental health issues or can they develop?

We Answered:

No you are not born with mental issues unless there was brain damage of some sort. But that does not sound like your situation. Mental/emotional issues develop because of what happens in life and how our minds learn to process information we are 'given'. Usually emotional difficulties begin to show themselves, if they are present in our later teen years. They can also show up before that or long after that depending on what our life has been like. If you think you are having a problem, it doesn't hurt to talk with a counselor or therapist to get the real answers you need to put yourself at ease. The teen years are some of the most difficult one we go through. There are alot of changes in our chemistry, emotions and life expectations and peer pressure. Don't be afraid to seek counseling. You will be glad you did. Take good care of yourself! M. :)

Can someone work as a nurse if they have a history of serious mental health issues and suicide attempts ?

We Answered:

If you have a history of mental health issues and suicide attempts, I don't think nursing is quite what you need. There is a lot of pain and death to cope with. Plus drugs are easily available. Are you able to care for someone else? Can you care for yourself? I think the disability rules allow them to ask if you have any disabilities that would prevent you from performing the duties of the job. Do you think you can? Maybe you should ask your therapist if you are in good enough condition to do the work. I would say it depends on what problems you had and how severe they still are. Good luck and may God bless you.

Shirley Said:

Do you care about being judged when it comes to mental health issues ?

We Answered:

The more ignorant people are about something, the more judgmental they are. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself and let the critics be damned. Those who care about you will want to know more information about your illness so they can understand how to keep you well, the rest don't matter ;-).
