Doctor Career Information

Randall Said:

College Career Information?

We Answered:

Job shadowing means you are observing and not getting paid. Volunteering means you are working and not getting paid. Employers are very wary about letting 'strangers' into the work areas. They have to cover you with workers compensation even if you are not actually getting paid. Plus with HIPPA regulations they are not going to let you look at medical files because of the confidentiality issues.

What schoolind do you need to become an ER doctor? What are the starting salaries (approximate)? Work hours?

We Answered:

After high school - it is 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and then 3 years of residency.

There is considerable variation in pay and hours per week.......I am at the upper end of both pay and hours worked...I work a MINIMUM of 60 hours/week (5 12 hour shifts) and a MAXIMUM of 84 hours/week. I have some additional duties but will gross nearly $400K this year.

Military wife wanting to pursue A career as a doctor?

We Answered:

All doctors don't necessarily have their own practice. Hospitals hire doctors too. They're called "hospitalists" and they're generalists; typically on call on a rotational schedule for a hospital. You could most definitely work out of clinics as well. You don't have to establish a practice of your own in order to be a physician.

Plus.. just an observation. This would put you both in med school simultaneously? This might not be the smartest choice for your marriage.... your time apart would increase greatly.

I'm interested in a career as a doctor-what are some things to do to prepare?

We Answered:

College - 4 years
Medical school - 4 years
Residency - 3-8 years

Classes in high school - take the most rigorous courseload available at your high school, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus. Learn Spanish if possible. Do some health related volunteering.

Where should you go to college - any respectable 4-year university is acceptable, though ceteris paribus coming from a prestigious university helps. Balance debt with reputation.

Courses - 1 year intro general chemistry, 1 year organic chemistry, at least 1 semester calculus, 1 year English, 1 year biology with lab, 1 year physics with lab. Some medical schools require statistics, biochemistry, psychology, or other humanities/social sciences. Again learn Spanish if possible, do health-related volunteering, etc. Also it helps to do scientific research.

Majors - as far as medical school goes, it doesn't matter as long as you have a 3.6+ GPA. However many premeds never make it into medical school, so be realistic about your options and about whether you need something practical, like Engineering, Economics, or Education, or something less practical - Biology, History, etc.

General costs -
I would assume that private colleges are running about $50k per year by now. Private medical schools are $70k per year with almost no "financial aid" aside from loans. Public colleges and medical schools are much cheaper. It should be mentioned that public medical schools aren't "safeties" the way some public colleges are - the easiest medical schools to get into also tend to be the most expensive.

Good colleges in PA - sure. Again any respectable 4 year university.

Google "student doctor network" for more information about applying to medical school.
