Nope, didn't convince me at all, I think these Dr's were only props.
And to address another answer..it's true lab coats were handed out at the White House for those Dr's showing up without them.

It is a tradition that probably has many origins. Here are a few that I can think of off the top of my head. These are most likely only partial truths, but they sound good nonetheless :)

1: White is considered a clean and healthy color. When ill, one wants to feel clean and healthy again, so the color of white on a doctor gives the impression that they will help you feel clean and healthy.

2: White is the easiest color clothing to stain and get messy. So, in olden days when clothing was washed in much more inefficient ways, an experienced doctor's coat would have far more blood and other stains on it. So, a dirty white coat was an easy visual queue of the doctor's experience and length time practicing.
