Where can I find a Doctor of Physical Therapy in the greater Toronto area?We Answered:
A doctorate of physical therapy does not necessarily have any more training in orthopedics than a "regular" physical therapist. Rather, the DPT degree focuses more on the basic diagnostic and assessment procedures.A PT with an MS or even BS who has been focusing in orthopedics for the last ten years is probably going to help you more than a recent graduate of a DPT program. This is a field where experience and CONTINUING education count.
Loretta Said:
Can a doctor of Physical Therapy be considered a real doctor or MD?We Answered:
Mary is correct...a DPT is doctorate of physical therapy. An MD is a doctor of medicine. The term "doctor" has actually been come to be used incorrectly. The word has Latin origins which mean "to teach"...so really doctors (or MDs) stole the term from academia. The proper term for a "doctor" is really "physician."The title of DPT does not earn someone a higher salary. Rather, it allows them to be better prepared to see patients under direct access...in otherwords, being able to see a PT without first seeing a physician. They are better trained at recognizing when underlying medical pathologies may exist (which require referral to physician). It's the trend in physical therapy and nearly all PT programs are now DPT level programs.

How hard is it to get accepted into a Doctor of Physical Therapy program? We Answered:
Historically, acceptance rates are 10-30%...meaning that 10-30% of applicants who meet at LEAST the minimum standard are accepted. Most PT programs have a minimum GPA requirements of 3.0 and a GRE score of 800-1000. Therefore, to be a competitive applicant, one should aim for at least a 3.5 GPA and a GRE score above 1000
