Can some one give me a list of all the current Doctor Who books, to date, in release order?

We Answered:

There is a complete listing at http://www.timelash.com/tardis/list.asp?… .

Juan Said:

Are the Doctor Who books good or am I just better off watching the show?

We Answered:

Well..there are books, comic books(IDW publishes some, but apparently DW comic books have been published since at least the 80's..I've seen collections available in graphic novel format), audio adventures(often featuring the original actors who played the roles..it seems David Tennant popped up in a few before he became a Doctor himself), etc. Big Finish is the main company.

Probably not many of us who watch the show would consider any of the other stuff to be "canon", but does it really matter if you enjoy it anyway? I think some of the BBC books were supposed to be a canon continuation of the show after it went off the air, but their status has obviously changed since the show came back in 2005. Producer Russell T Davies seems to have written some of them in the 90's, and a few ideas from those BBC books formed the basis for the 2005 show..like all the Time Lords being dead. Keep in mind there was more than one license/series of books as well.

Just yesterday I found this site that apparently reviews all manner of Who-dom..so you can decide for yourself. They accept submissions so many books will have several reviews.

Here's one: http://www.pagefillers.com/dwrg/grimm.ht…

I can't find a search function, which is crap on a website like this..maybe I'm just missing it. Oh well, if you want to find a particular story but don't know what line of books it's under, you could just use a search engine and type "Grimm Reality" and "Doctor Who Ratings Guide" or whatever.

I came across a few summarized on Wikipedia which I plan to check out.."Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Grimm Tales", and "Scarlet Empress" sound great. There is apparently an audio line called "Doctor Who Unbound" which has "what if?" stories about The Doctor. Some of them sound really interesting to me. Like "Auld Mortality" and its sequel asks what if the Doctor had never left Gallifrey? Apparently there is one called "Deadline" that is centered around a writer wondering what would've happened if his "Doctor Who" TV idea had ever taken off. Apparently in this story, there was never a TV show in '63.

And even though Matt Smith is new, there have already been graphic novels and the like published for him and Amelia Pond.

One graphic novel I plan on reading is "Doctor Who: The Forgotten" from the 10th Doctor's era..apparently he's stuck in a museum dedicated to him, and he has amnesia. I guess it's a way to teach newer fans some of the history of the previous Doctors. Well, I'm basically a new fan, but I've really dove in over the past year and watched tons of old stuff as well as new.

I think I'm interested in some of the wilder Doctor Who novels like the ones I named because I wouldn't consider the books to be "canon" or "official" history anyway..so get wild and experiment, right?

Anyway, from the First Doctor to the Eleventh, there is tons of media and even just novels out there for you already. Check out the review site and decide for yourself..it's what I've decided to do.

I think given the sheer amount of different writers involved..even with the BBC deciding and enforcing a "story arc" for them to follow back in the 90's..your mileage is going to vary from story to story.

Barry Said:

Are the Doctor Who books worth reading?

We Answered:

The books are in no way childish and some are very good depending on what author you prefer and their style and what type of story you like, some are kind of detective style some are more horror orientated, there are some called short trips and side steps (i think that's the title of the series) and they are short stories. If you like fantasy you can ask me for a chunk of my story to read im looking for some test readers!

Its got some kind of dragons as well as modern stuff and an ancient artefact in there which causes time travel!

Hope you find some good Dr. Who books to read!

James Said:

Where can I read Doctor Who books online? the ones with the ninth and tenth doctors?

We Answered:

You spend too much time on the cell phone so that justifies stealing from authors!

Authors write books to make money. Don't steal from them.

You can read classics online legally, but not current books.

Frederick Said:

Are Doctor Who Audio Books considered canon?

We Answered:

Yes they are, and so are the novels, they're official cos they all go through the BBC. As they are "BBC Audio Books" and "BBC Books"

Gabriel Said:

The Doctor in books (from Doctor Who)?

We Answered:

In the book Brisingr of Christopher Paolini's book series, Arya refers to a "lonely god" travelling across a "sea of time" which Paolini admits was a reference to Doctor Who.

In the comic book Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight #6 ("No Future for You" Part 1), the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler appear in cameo on the penultimate page, alongside a red telephone box. In issue #10 ("Anywhere but Here"), a cottage appears which, like the TARDIS, is bigger on the inside.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_of_t… ~ In this black comedy book by Andy Riley, one drawing features the Fourth Doctor escaping a Dalek as he runs into the TARDIS. On top of the TARDIS is a bunny with a slipknot tied round its neck in order to hang itself once the TARDIS has dematerialized.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Areas_o… ~ John Hodgman's book makes references to Doctor Who in several places. In the beginning, where (made up) literary themes are being discussed, a still from The Wheel in Space is used to illustrate the theme of "Man vs. Cyborg".

In a later section listing the names of hobos, one is "The Nine Doctor Whos". In the same section, a "Hobo Pictogram" is stated as meaning "A house that is bigger on the inside than the outside".

Discuss It!
