Regina Said:

why was there no new episode for Doctor Who this week?

We Answered:

I think it had to do with the Memorial Day three-day weekend. They kind of did a mini-marathon of Doctor Who instead. Maybe to get new viewers that may not have been around normally?

At least there is a new one on Saturday!

What happed to Rose in Doctor Who?

We Answered:

She was sucked into an alternate universe. The one where the Cybermen were earlier in the series, and where Pete Tyler is still alive. It was the only way to defeat the Daleks and Cybermen that had invaded through Torchwood. The Doctor manages to find a rift and use all the energy the TARDIS has to say goodbye to Rose through a hologram. She tells him she loves him and he is cut off before he can tell her the same. It made me cry. You might be able to find that scene on YouTube.

Bruce Said:

Okay, you "Hitchhickers Guide"/Doctor Who fans...?

We Answered:

It was the Krikkit robots that were the basis for the Doctor Who episodes.

If you imagine the Doctor and companion (I think it was written for Tom Baker but I'm not sure) as Ford and Arthur at Lords, with Ford being replaced by Trillian in the 'conversations' with 'The Bomb', you can get a vague idea.

I think its 'The salmon of Doubt' that has a version starring the Doctor as a synopsis, but I'm not sure.

Jimmie Said:

Who played Earl's doctor on My Name is Earl, Mar 22 episode?

We Answered:

William Schallert. Among his many hundreds of roles, he played the father of Patty and Ross Lane on "The Patty Duke Show."

Doctor Who veterans please read!?

We Answered:

You can start at the very beginning, but to watch every show that still survives from 1963 onward would be a lot of watching. And the older shows were obviously produced on a low budget, especially in respect to special effects and costuming. That is part of the fun of those shows, if you can get into looking at it that way. Not everyone can.

In any case, a more reasonable place to start, in my opinion, would be with the first shows of the new version, beginning in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. These shows are high budget and usually good on all levels. Also, to start with, the executive producer Russell T. Davies avoided putting in a lot of continuity to the old show to avoid confusing the many new viewers. But even here, I admit, it helps to know who the Autons and the Nestene consciousness are. But the show was successful with people who didn’t know that.

One can get along without knowing EVERYTHING. After all, when the original show was on the new viewers were constantly being attracted to it despite not known EVERYTHING that had gone on before.

Note that you might also view the Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventure stories at the same time as there are sometimes crossovers.

I suggest the following 20 DVD releases from the old series as the most valuable, if you wish to have a small collection:

1. The Beginning (First Doctor: containing the first three broadcast Doctor Who stories and an abridged audio of the fourth story The second story is the first Dalek story. The Daleks immediately became the Doctor’s main foes.) You can start at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxD0xurcq… .

2. The Dalek Invasion of Earth (First Doctor: A good story, the departure of the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan, and an ending rebroadcast more than once in subsequent shows.)

3. The Time Meddler (First Doctor: The first appearance of another Time Lord.)

4. The War Games (Second Doctor: A ten-episode story, the last story starring the Second Doctor, and the story which introduces the Time Lord race.)

5. Spearhead from Space (Third Doctor: The first story of the Third Doctor, the first story in colour, and the introduction of the Autons who appear again in the first episode of the new series.)

6. Doctor Who and the Silurians (Third Doctor: The Doctor first encounters the Silurians, an ancient, intelligent reptilian race that once controlled Earth, and want it back. It is interesting to compare the realization of the Silurians themselves in this episode and in the new series.)

7. The Three Doctors. (Third Doctor: a tenth anniversary story in which the Third Doctor meets the First and Second Doctors.)

8. The Time Warrior (Third Doctor: The Doctor takes Sarah Jane Smith as his companion and battles a Sontaran for the first time. Sarah Jane Smith now appears in a Doctor Who spin-off show “The Sarah Jane Adventures” and the Sontarans are still recurring villains.)

9. Genesis of the Daleks (Fourth Doctor: The Doctor is sent back in time by the Time Lords to stop the Daleks from ever existing. This is the first story of Davros, a deformed, mad scientist, who created the Daleks and who appears in subsequent Dalek stories in the old series [and once in the new series so far].)

10. The Hand of Fear (Fourth Doctor: Sarah Jane Smith’s last adventure as a regular companion.)

11. The Deadly Assassin (Fourth Doctor: The Doctor on his home planet of Gallifrey.)

12. The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Fourth Doctor: Often considered to be the best Fourth Doctor story. The Time Agency of the 51st century is only mentioned here in the old series but becomes important in the new series.)

13. The Invisible Enemy, and K-9 and Company: a Girl’s Best Friend (Fourth Doctor: the Doctor gets his robot dog K-9 in the first story here and the second story is the pilot episode of a hoped-for series featuring Sarah Jane Smith and K-9, Mark3.)

14. City of Death (Fourth Doctor: a very funny story set in Paris, written under an alias by Douglas Adams, later author of the “Hitchhiker Guide'' radio show and books.)

15. The Five Doctors (Fifth Doctor: a twentieth anniversary special including all five Doctors and the Master with several companions in one adventure.)

16. The Caves of Androzani (Fifth Doctor: the last story of the Fifth Doctor, often considered the best.)

17. Vengeance on Vardos (Sixth Doctor: possibly the best Sixth Doctor story. The period of the Sixth Doctor is generally considered a low point in the series.)

18. Remembrance of the Daleks (Seventh Doctor: a twenty-fifth anniversary story containing many references and parallels to earlier adventures.)

19. Ghost Light (Seventh Doctor: A VERY strange and surrealistic story.)

20. The Curse of Fenric (Seventh Doctor: another highly praised Seventh Doctor story.)

Then follows:

21. “Doctor Who: The Movie” (Eighth Doctor: a television movie giving the only video appearance of the Eighth Doctor. Available on DVD in Britain but not in North America because of a rights dispute, but can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fazMQwNpp… . Usually thought to be not especially good.)

No fan, asked to make a list, would choose exactly the same releases. But I believe that most lists would contain a majority of these releases. I have partly provided stories that are most important for the current series and partly material that I think excellent and tried to include episodes scattered throughout the series.

In the classic series, most stories are 4 episodes long, and most episodes are 25 minutes, but many stories are six episodes or more and a few are less than 4 episodes. In the new series most stores are 1 episode (45 minutes) long but some are 2 episodes long and the specials are each one long episode.
