Doctor Without Borders

Felicia Said:

How long does somebody have to be a doctor before they can join Doctors without Borders?

We Answered:

These are the requirements:

Here are the basic requirements for working with MSF in the field.

-At least 2 years of relevant professional experience
-For physicians, completion of residency.
-Availability for a minimum of 9 to 12 months
-With the exception of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OB/GYNs who may be accepted for shorter assignments.
-No recent gap in clinical experience greater than 2 years
-French language skills are considered a major asset
-Relevant travel or work outside the United States
-Experience supervising, managing, & training others
-Flexibility and adaptability

So for an MD it would depend on your field as to how long you would have to practice before participating. Since you have to have completed your residency, and residency is done after your internship, you are looking at a minimum of 2-3 years and much longer is you are a surgeon.

Ruth Said:

What is the salary for a Doctor Without Borders?

We Answered:

I believe all the doctors who participate with this group are volunteers. Many of them do it because they genuinely want to help those people in areas of the world that so desperately need them.

Mark Said:

How do I stop donating to doctor's without borders?

We Answered:

According to their website,
"You can increase, decrease, or suspend your gift amount at any time by calling MSF at 1-888-392-0392."
That number is supposedly available 24/7.

If calling that number isn't working for you, here's other contact info from their website

Leah Said:

Any military doctor or "doctor without borders" that can provide me with advice?

We Answered:

Daer Vinny,

You are a junior in high school.

If you want to become an army doctor it will require 4 year of college, 4 years of med school, and then many more years of residency, which could be served in the military.

To be a combat medic, you will need a high school diploma.

Based on your grammar, spelling, and your complete lack of respect for the veterans/ the military, I'm going to tell you that you don't have what it takes to become a doctor. You aren't smart enough, and you don't have the motivation.

You could, however, become an combat medic. Granted, you won't be a very good one, but there's a chance you might make it.

Lee Said:

What is the French translation of "“Excuse me, I have doctorate of letters, I am a doctor without borders?”

We Answered:

Excusez-moi. J'ai un doctorat en littérature (or: en lettres) et je suis un docteur sans frontières.

Since "Médecins Sans Frontières" was created, other professional organisations took their name on a similar model: Ingénieurs sans frontières etc. and "xyz sans frontières" is becoming common language.

So your PhD character should remain a "docteur", not a "médecin". Nearly everyone will get your drift.

note: 'je détiens un doctorat' is correct language, but it is not spelt "je détients"
