How to find a family doctor in Toronto?

We Answered:

Choose a place that is close enough to your home. Pick a place that has a lot of doctors. Not just one. If you don't like the first one, switch to another one. You can learn a lot by talking to people in the waiting room. It's trial and error. It's really important to "click" with your doctor, as I'm sure you know.
When you make the first appointment, ask the scheduling person which doctor is best for your personal problems.
Good luck! :)

If I were to seek counseling in college would my family doctor find out?

We Answered:

As a therapist working in a college counseling center, I can tell you that there is no way your counselor would tell your family doctor about your sessions. Your counselor would be legally and ethically bound to keep all of your sessions confidential unless you were an immediate threat to yourself or someone else, if you report child, elder or disabled person abuse or if there were a subpoena. Even if, say, your family doctor called the counseling center and asked if you were a client there, they could not confirm nor deny you were -- it's confidential. I encourage you to go see a counselor at your college campus -- it's probably one of the few times in life you can receive counseling for free or very cheap. Good luck :)

Should I go to the ER or wait until I find a family doctor?

We Answered:

Since it's gotten worse I think you should go to the ER. After all, it's getting worse and you ma y not be able to go to work tomorrow if you don't get the right medication tonight.

Is it true that nearly 5 million people in Canada cannot find a family doctor?

We Answered:

From the Government itself....
"Canadians continue to suffer from a doctor shortage, according to a new report that found 1 in 5 people have not been able to find a physician to treat them regularly.

A Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) released Wednesday found that more than four million Canadians are without a doctor, either because they have not found a family physician to take them on, or because they have not looked for one.

This proportion was up by 3 per cent since the 1996/1997 National Population Health Survey.

"The overall picture of the study is that we're not doing as well as we need to do in the whole picture," said Dr. Brian Day with the Canadian Medical Association. "A 26,000 doctor shortage falls short of the average of other developing countries.""

The problem is that the only way Canada has been able to keep the cost of socialized medicine affordable is by strictly limiting how much a doctor can earn. As a result, many Canadian doctors leave the country to practive in countries where they can earn more. (As a personal note, I live in California, and my family physician is from Canada)

The NDP commercial is, therefore (like most political adverts) partly true. Yes, nearly 5 million Canadians are without a family Dr. Not all of them, though, have been "unable to find one" - although many have.

How do I find a family doctor who accepts new patients in London, Ontario?

We Answered:

We have that information listed on our website:
http://healthkiwi.ca/Canada-Healthcare-Directory/Family+Medicine/London

Browse through several pages and you will see doctors with green check-marks in the "accepting new patients" field.

For example, several doctors are accepting new patients at 458 Central Avenue, London, ON, (519) 679-8739 or (519) 432-3595

And feel free to update our information and contribute!
