Management Courses For Doctors

Methadone/opiates and pregnancy - For medical professionals only, please.?

We Answered:

It is a bad idea to remain on the narcotic pain medicine while pregnant as this would not only induce a "withdrawl" for the baby, but potentially cause permanent neurological damage. You want to take the least amount of medicine possible, and overall maintain a healthy diet. I would suggest going to a pharmacy and purchasing an OTC prenatal Multivitamin.

I need some answers about being under a Pain Management Doctor. Need nurses to help me.?

We Answered:

Wow. I know what you're going through. I'm a nurse and was on chronic pain meds for my back for 2 yrs. First of all, Tramadol and Toradol are NOT narcotics! I think sometimes these PA's make up stuff thinking we don't know any better. I'm surprised that they wouldn't give you these considering when I've run into the same thing that's all they want to give me. I'm allergic to Tramadol but they still try to force it on me. Yeah, doctors can be idiots! I know from my experience that if I don't take pain meds exactly as prescribed they will NOT refill them early. So I've learned to call right away if I'm going through them too fast or they're not working as prescribed. If they don't budge then I've gone to different doctors. Another option is to go to the ER. I know from my experience though they don't like seeing chronic pain patients in the ER but sometimes it's the only option. As far as the withdrawal part, I am so sorry. I have been through this too many times. It's why I finally went off all narcotics. I can't stand withdrawal symptoms. I don't know what you were taking or how much but if your doctor knows this he/she should at least give you some anti-anxiety medication and/or Clonidine for withdrawals. They help. I'd be careful though. I've mentioned this in ER visits, along with my pain being out of control, and they seem to focus on the withdrawal part and treat you like an addict. I learned not to mention withdrawals at all, unless it was the original doctor who wouldn't give me pain meds to begin with. I hope you get relief soon. Hang in there!
