My Eye Doctor

Dwight Said:

Can an eye doctor tell you your contact lens prescription by just looking at your glasses?

We Answered:

they usually take your glasses, does a measurement with your glasses with a measuring instrument, then begin the eye exam based on the existing measurement of your glasses.

Leo Said:

What kind of eye drop is used at the eye doctor's office to dilate your pupils?

We Answered:

The general term for these drugs is mydriatic. A common ingredient is tropicamide, under brand names such as Mydriacil, Mydral, Ocu-Tropic, etc. While any medical practitioner may use these drugs to dilate the pupil, they are most frequently employed by an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. They produce dilation of the pupil lasting 4 - 6 hours or so. Atropine is a more potent mydriatic/cycloplegic whose effects last much longer. The story goes that Italian women put it in their eyes as a beauty aid. Hence the alternate name, belladonna = beautiful woman.

An oft overlooked mydriatic for the FP, internist or pediatrician is 2.5% phenylephrin. It produces satisfactory dilation and last just a short time.

All of them sting. I usually put a drop of anesthetic in the eye first.

Maxine Said:

Can a regular eye doctor help me with an eye infection?

We Answered:

Mike, you need to see a physician who can write a prescription which an optometrist cannot do in most states. An eye physician specialist, called an ophthalmologist is the best but more expensive and harder to get an appointment with, and likely unnecessary. Most family practice physicians and internal medicine physicians (internist) are quite adequate for your needs. Don't delay.

Gregory Said:

How much is it for the doctor to measure my eye?

We Answered:

I doubt he would do just that, it would be unethical. He would give an eye exam as well just to be there are no hidden problems.

I would guess $75 for the exam. Check Costco or Walmart.
