Types Of Doctors

Allan Said:

what are all the different types of doctors? What colleges should i go to be a doctor?

We Answered:

There are lots and lots of different types of medical specialties you can go into, Wikipedia might give you ideas of the different specialties that are available.
As far as grades go, you want to try for a 4.0 or higher-I know that's kind of rough, but the medical school admissions are very competative, and good grades will get you noticed. So will volunteering.
As far as schools go, you have lots of choices, it kind of depends on which part of the country you want to live in. In California, I'd recommend UC Davis or Stanford.

What types of doctors are able to have a healthy family life?

We Answered:

Your career is what you make of it, regardless of whether you are a physician or some other professional. There will be many times when your job will interfere with family time, especially during training and early days of practice, but you can choose a practice situation that is more amenable to family life if that is your priority. You will most likely sacrifice income for that, though.

You should not choose a specialty based on how much time off you'll get.

What types of doctors do athletes visit?

We Answered:

Hey, we're on the same boat!
They usually go to a sports medicine doctor (like osteopathic doctors) but then they are usually referred to a physical therapist for rehab, especially if they broke something or had surgery on something or pulled a muscle or what have you.

This was helpful. You may want to check it out.

What other types of doctors are there that I could consider?

We Answered:

I want to be a doctor too and im doing alot of research, A good site is MDsalaries cause it lists all types of doctors, what they do and about how much they make a year in different cities in the US. For me, im thinking of being a Cardiologist or Forensic Pathologist. ;)
But its best just to go to college Pre-Med, then get into Medical School and take a few courses to see what your most interested in. Lucky for me, my high school offers a Medical Sciences Class.

There are many doctorates - almost every field has one. Medical Doctor (MD) is only one of the very many.

There is the PhD (in about any subject), the EdD (Doctor of Education), the DBA (Doctor of Business Administration), DPH (Doctor of Public Health), DA (Doctor of Arts), DMus (Doctor of Music), DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts), DME (Doctor of Music Education), PysD (Doctor of Psychology), ThD (Doctor of Theology), DSc (Doctor of Science) and lots more.... these are academic doctorates and take about 8-10 years after high school.

There is also the MD (Medical Doctor), JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence), DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery), DO (Doctor of Osteopathy), DC (Doctor of Chiropractic), DPTh (Doctor of Physical Therapy), PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy), and lots more... these are first professional degrees and take about 3-4 years after you get your bachelor's degree but many of these professions also require an internship or more advanced study for a specialty area.

The prenomial title of all of these people is properly "Doctor". The occupational title of an MD (Medical Doctor) isn't "Doctor", it's "Physician".
