I would start off with your own personal physician, who knows you and your medical background. If he or she won't prescribe it, there would be sound medical reason -- which would cause me to dismiss the idea of taking this drug. (You'll recall the class action suit against phen fen a few years ago.)

Here's some information I found:
It can produce side effects consistent with its catecholamine-releasing properties, e.g., tachycardia (increased heart rate) and elevated blood pressure, but the incidence and magnitude of these appear to be less than with the amphetamines. Because phentermine acts through sympathomimetic pathways, the drug may increase blood pressure and heart rate. It may also cause palpitations, restlessness, and insomnia. Additionally, phentermine has the potential to cause physical and psychological dependence.

I know first hand not to do surgery for weight, unless completely the last step! A pretty young girl that my mother knew, had something to do with her stomach after she got too heavy. She was in and out of hospitals for years! Do not do this! Get your kid on a healthy diet and exercise every day! Cut down on his portions! Stop looking for the easy way out! Exercise along with your kid if you have to. But, surgery is wrong for a growing kid! Let him join a club if necessary.

I feel your pain. I have gone through what you are currently going through. Obesity runs in my family its a gene that I picked up and no matter how much I diet and exercises it just does not get any better. Many people that will answer these questions can not answer because they do not know what you are going through. How many times have you heard "just stick to diet and exercises and you will be ok"? I have not had my surgery yet My insurance denied my coverage so I have opted to have mine overseas in India because it is 1/3rd of the price here. I can answer your questions based off of my sisters experience who had her gastric bypass in India a year and a half ago.

Did it work for you? Yes it worked very well.
Would you do it again? In a heart beat
Did you have complications? the only "complication" she had was she did loose interest in some of her favorite foods. What you have to understand is during this process your taste buds will change dramatically. So you will loose interest in certain foods as well.
How much weight did you lose? She lost a total of 125 pounds and looks absolutely great!
How did it affect you mentally? It gave her a huge confidence boost. She feels more secure when going shopping or just out doing everyday activities. Not worried about people "watching" her or whatever.

You have to be prepared for a life style change you will eat small meals for the rest of your life, you will have to take vitamins and suppliments for the rest of your life. I really hope your insurance covers this surgery. In the off chance that they do not. You should talk with the people that scheduled me for my surgery in India. They are the best at what they do and helpped me with financing and everything and I had horrible credit.
