Olga Said:

What! I can't buy a gun? Can I still own one?

We Answered:

The bill isn't designed or intended to keep guns away from people with normal mood disorders, or to disuade them from getting treatment in order to keep their rights. The prohibition applies only to people who have been adjudged to be a danger either to themselves or others. State laws vary, but it usually takes a couple of doctors signing paperwork to force an evaluation and a court judgment for commitment to reach the level of prohibiting gun ownership, and even then it's possible to have the prohibition removed. As a matter of fact, the new law requires notifications and funds the process, so your rights are actually protected to a degree compared to how things have been. The only group who should be worried about the change are those who use a suicide gesture (not a real attempt) to gain attention.

Charlotte Said:

Is Goldman Sachs too big to fail, or just too big?

We Answered:

Neither, just too well connected.

Tanya Said:

What do you think about the proposed closure of women's prisons in the UK?

We Answered:

The law is supposed to apply equally to men and women. We cannot entertain a system where one sex gets lighter treatment than the other for the same crime.

The statistics you post point to a need to reform the whole prison system, which has lost sight of its role in rehabilitation. While it's true that women are often victims of previous abuse, drug and alcohol problems that is equally true of men.

No mention is made of male on male rape within the prison system which is rife.

No mention is made of male on male assault within the prison system.

The jail system fails both sexes, and the community it is designed to protect. That needs to be addressed. Giving women criminals a free pass on their crimes isn't the way to address it.

Wendy Said:

Is there too much feminism in psychology and psychiatry?

We Answered:

If psychology and psychiatry is to claim the 'merits' and authority of science, it must not let ANY political influence into its theory and practice. To the extent the politics affects the theory and practice of these disciplines, they are diminished.

If one turns to physics, in contrast, no one but the crazies ask "what is the feminist view" of the laws of gravity (Newtonian, Relativistic or the still-unclear quantum versions).

Constance Said:

If anyone in Ireland cares about mental health watch this please?

We Answered:

Your link doesn't work, try this: go to the tab where you're playing your link, then right click on the address bar at the top of the window, select copy, then paste the link into your question.
Probably best to repost in a new question.

Dan Said:

Andrea Yates. Does anybody have any current news on her since she was sentenced to Vernon Mental Hospital?

We Answered:

Blaming physicians for illness is not the answer. Physicians are not mind readers, nor can they predict the future, nor can they control patient compliance once they have left the hospital. It is always tempting to try to find someone to blame when an illnes such as Ms. Yates' ends in such horrific tragedy. The bottom line, though, is that psychotic breaks (particularly violent ones - when the patient has not demonstrated any violent tendencies previously) are not predictable.

Might her spouse have been in error in leaving her to deal with the children? Perhaps. My guess, though, is that he was a man under a lot of pressure, who was dealing as best he could. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm sure Mr. Yates probably wrestles with this every day of his life.
