Yes. You need a European Health Insurance Card - EHIC. Its credit card sized and free. The relevant Spanish authority will issue it. It proves you qualify for care in Spain and hence qualify for reciprocal care.

but for others reading this: you can order a first or renewal EHIConline for free with delivery usually within 7days (and I've just done as mine has expired).

I've the few of these sites where you have to pay they offer a no faster and possibly slower service all they do is "review" whatever that means and forward your application. I hate these sites there have been similar scams for company data protection registration (again free) etc.

I suggest EVERYONE checks if I'm wrong by DOing A GOOGLE search for EHIC and then CLICKing on THE ADDs ON THE RIGHT - you can then check out what they offer and see whether you should use them - unfortunately?? everyone who clicks on their ads will cost the companies money!

Yes these people will be found out. It is based on their social insurance contributions and so they will have to have submitted the persons social security number to obtain it. I hope the person in whose name the card is made out to is also not claiming tax allowance as a non resident because then someone will be going to prison for tax evasion, or fraud, or embezzlement of state funds. I hope this is not you!

Why do you Brits always think that your documents need to be valid 6 months in advance??
That is rubbish in Europe!!
All you need is a valid passport and also only a valid EHIC to travel. There is no requirement to renew it 6 months in advance prior to travel.
