European Health Insurance Card Uk

Andrew Said:

european health insurance card help and what it covers?

We Answered:

Do you mean you applied for the EHIC card? If so then this covers you only as a tourist in the Netherlands and only for emegency cover, so e.g. going to a doctor for a routine issue is not covered only. it is only for emegencies and may not even cover all costs anyway. An EHIC card issued by the UK is only for UK residents. http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-livi…

As soon as you register at the gemeentehuis (municipality) which you will need to do in order to get a BSN number (like the UK NI number) in order to work, then you become a legal resident

When you are legally residing in the Netherlands the EHIC card will not cover you, and all NL residents are required by law to have the basic health insurance cover. http://www.minvws.nl/en/themes/health-in…

Now there is one possibility I know of if you are not working and that is claiming benefit under the E106 and you can read about this here http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcarea… However as soon as you have work, then you will need Dutch health insurance.

Going abroad without a European health card from the Uk?

We Answered:

Last year we went to the Republic of Ireland for some rest and recuperation. Three days after arriving there I was taken ill with severe chest pains which necessitated a trip in an ambulance to Galway hospital some 50 miles from where we were staying. At the hospital I received immediate attention which required a range of blood tests and a chest x-ray. It was found that I had bacterial pneumonia and a chest infection with associated pleurisy (the pain). I was put on a course of three different antibiotics and an anti inflammatory medication. On production of my EHIC, I did not have to part with a penny, even though travel/health insurance was in place and would have been used if I had had to return home.

I wouldn't go anywhere in Europe without that card whether I had insurance or not!
