Financial Assistance and Other Resources for People With Cancer:Cancer imposes heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. For many people, a portion of medical expenses is paid by their health insurance plan. For individuals who do not have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including Government-sponsored programs and services supported by nonprofit organizations. Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their physician, medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 300 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.

Samantha Said:

Health care for everyone?

We Answered:

Universal health care never went through. There is no free health care for someone your age unless you are on welfare... Your best bet would be to find a free health clinic and at least get a physical once a year (not sure if the free clinics offer this) for now until you can afford insurance.

No, nothing really changed except insurance rates went up. At least nothing very helpful for most people. In a few years, you will have to have insurance, if you don't, you will be penalized. Some other changes include being able to stay on your parent's health insurance plan (if it is though their work) until the age of 26, no maximum lifetime limits, and a few other things.

Willie Said:

Why is a Rasmussen poll showing 60% of americans not ready for health insurance changes and 53% say they?

We Answered:

Most Americans are smart enough to realize that the health care is not "FREE". I pay for my own health care. My company does not provide it for me, but I know that "FREE" health care is bull crap.

Just look at Canada. Why do those people come over to the U.S. for treatment? What, do they just like traveling for medical attention and paying cash?

Willie Said:

Does anyone know of any free services in Pa. for someone that has cancer and no longer has health insurance?

We Answered:

His employer should have offered him the option of keeping the insurance via COBRA. You need to call the insurance company ASAP and find out how his polciy was canceled. Once you explain the situation you should be able to continue the coverage.

Teresa Said:

How soon after the Health Care Reform law goes into effect, will insurance carriers start getting bailouts?

We Answered:

It would be my best guess that the private health care insurers will start to abandon the health care policies before the new limitations go into full effect. The public option will have to be addressed to cover the vacuum left by their removal of private policies. That will eventually become the only option available. The public option was abandoned with the knowledge the private insurance companies could not withstand the added costs of the new requirements and that it would eventually have to be added. The only other option would be for the government to cover the cost variance and guarantee the insurers a limited profit. That would require more bureaucratic involvement in private industry and more costs incurred by the administration of those funds.
