Health Insurance Brokers

Marion Said:

Average health and benefit insurance brokers' commission in NY, CA and IL?

We Answered:

Are you talking about people who work for other agencies, or people who own their own? First year commissions, or continuing commissions?

Most states do NOT allow you to charge BOTH a fee, AND commission - but many agents are moving to flat fee basis for commercial accounts, and writing the policies at 0 commission.

Robin Said:

i have found a health insurance broker, how do I tell if they're any good or have bad reports from customers?

We Answered:

You can't really tell. There's no agency that keeps track of that, or even that rates what's good or what's bad.

If they spend time with you, return your calls promptly, and explain the coverages, they're good.

Janice Said:

How do I fire my health insurance broker..?

We Answered:

You call the health insurance COMPANY, and tell them you want to switch brokers, and want to get a broker of record letter. They'll give you the number of a few other local brokers, you'll pick one, sign the letter, and they'll send it in and take over your policy.

Connie Said:

Can health insurance brokers put there own group of people together for a better price.?

We Answered:

You can't do that any more - put non-related groups together, and get a lower rate. That's because the higher risk people did it, which increased the claims of the group, which increased the pricing, which made the lower risk people drop out, which increased the percentage of less healthy people, which increased the claims of the group, etc.

The claims paid out spiral upwards faster than the premiums can, to cover the claims. But the broker is STILL your best bet, as they know who's got the most competitive plans in your area, AND, can help you balance premiums and coverages.
