Health Insurance Coverage

Leslie Said:

What to do if your application for health insurance coverage is denied due to lower back issues?

We Answered:

Depending upon your state, many companies will decline if you've had any back problems in the past 5 years. Visit a local independent agent. This person can contact the underwriters for you to see if any will accept you. Some companies may accept you but put a rider on any back problems. This means they won't cover anything that has to do with or is a result of the back problems. Some companies may cover after 1 year. The agent can find out for you.

In Texas - How does getting health insurance coverage for a newborn work?

We Answered:

We must have different versions of CIGNA, that's what my husband has and it covered me and my children (2 are his step-children) from the date of marriage. We were pregnant with our first together about 1 month after we were married and my maternity was completely covered, when the baby was born he was covered for 30 days automatically so everything was paid for, then we had to provide paperwork regarding his birth from the hospital and his social security number after we applied for and received his card and I got his very own insurance card about a month or so later, it did not take them long. We are on CIGNA Open Access though, there are several versions of CIGNA out there PPO, HMO, etc...... Whenever I have a question I usually call the 800 number on the back of the card, they are very friendly and very helpful with anything and everything in my experience, so if I were you I would just give them a call!!! Best wishes and congrats on your baby :)

What is considered a qualifying event for health insurance coverage?

We Answered:

If you waive insurance because you have health insurance from your spouse's insurance, and spouse is laid off and loses the insurance plan, then yes, that is a qualifying event. If you bought private coverage, and decide to stop paying for it, that is NOT a qualifying event.

So it all depends on how you have a policy already, and how during the year you lose that coverage.

Who should verify health insurance coverage and if procedures are approved?

We Answered:

It's your health, and your bank account that will be affected, so you should be the one checking the coverage and procedure approvals. You don't have to understand how the entire health system works, you just should be capable of asking an insurance care representative, or your HR representative, whether procedures are covered, and how much.
