Sheila Said:

How can I find inexpensive health insurance with maternity coverage?

We Answered:

The ONLY way to get this is to get hired on for a job with great benefits, and even then the exclusionary period may say you have no pregnancy coverage until nine months after you sign up. Other than that, nothing is priced low.

I'm pregnant and need health insurance but not maternity coverage!?

We Answered:

The insurance company is probably denying you because of potential complications related to pregnancy, which could be different from what you've already paid for. In the meantime, you could try for a state program to get medical coverage (the allowable income level is much higher for pregnant women so it's not too hard to get) and then try again to get regular insurance after your child is born,.

Health Insurance for Self employed with Maternity coverage?

We Answered:

First off, there are individual health insurance policies that include maternity coverage. However, as you know, it is much less common than with group health care plans. Here are three thoughts:

First, if you think you might have time to prepare for pregnancy – if you’re not planning to become pregnant right away – you might want to look into a health savings account (HSA). These accounts offer so-called triple tax benefits. The monies you deposit are pre-income tax dollars, the interest you earn is tax-free, and the money you withdraw is tax-free as long as it’s used for qualified medical expenses. There are restrictions to how much you can contribute, unlike another possible option called a health reimbursement arrangement, or HRA. These are for businesses, but you may qualify if your spouse works in your business.

Second, you might want to join a group health plan. Depending on what kind of work you do, there may be an association or guild that offers insurance to its members. Join the group and you’ll have access to group health insurance, which usually features maternity coverage at a large discount over individual health plans.

Third, some self-employed business owners are considered “groups of one.” That means that they have access to the same types of policies other businesses have – and that means group health insurance. Groups of one are not recognized in all states. To find out if the exist in Texas, you might want to call the state insurance office or a local insurance agent. MostChoice.com is a great place to get in touch with Texas insurance agents. After you fill out a brief information request form, you’ll be able to look at health plan details and prices from Texas insurers like UniCare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Local agents will also call you to talk about the best way to find affordable, full-featured maternity coverage. It’s all free, there’s no obligation, and your personal information will be kept completely confidential. Just click here: http://www.mostchoice.com/health-insuran…

What is the best Health insurance, with good maternity coverage?

We Answered:

We used to have a Blue Shield individual plan. There was a one year waiting period for maternity coverage, and then a $5000 deductible. Our monthly premiums were about $250.

Now we have Blue Cross. There's no maternity coverage on the plan we currently have (which is fine because we're done having kids). Monthly premiums for us and 2 kids are $320

Your best bet will be to meet with an insurance agent who represents lots of companies and then spend lots of time examining the pros and cons of each plan. Honestly, your best bet will be to get a job at a company that is large enough to offer a really good insurance plan as a benefit (my friend's hubby got a job at Boeing halfway through her high risk pregnancy and they covered 100% of her costs from the first day he started working, no preexisting clause and no waiting period). Otherwise you'll be stuck choosing between low deductibles but high premiums, or high deductibles with low premiums.

Another option, and the one we ultimately used for both of my pregnancies, is a university. If you don't already have a bachelor's degree you can enroll as an undergraduate and get the school's insurance. For my last pregnancy I had a $550 per semester premium, $250 deductible, and then they paid 80% (even with that incredibly good insurance plan we still paid $4000 out of pocket for my pregnancy and c-section).
