Major Medical Health Insurance

Rita Said:

Does Mental Health Insurance "Cap" or have a limit per year? Can mental health turn over into Major medical?

We Answered:

It depends upon her specific policy.

I've seen policies that have a cap on mental health. (And that cap can vary - can be based on the number of days/visits, based on the number of admissions per year, or capped on a total dollar amount. Just depends on how her specific policy would be spelled out.) However, I've also seen policies that don't have a cap at all.

Also, its possible that her going back within a week of getting discharged isn't considered a "new admission." (I've seen policies set up where if you are re-admitted within X number of days its not considered a "new admission.")

In her case, I would suspect that she has a policy that either doesn't have a cap, or that has a case management benefit. (Case management = a nurse from the insurance company and the medical provider negotiating a special rate/terms for a patient who is an outlier...falls outside the scope of the regular benefits.)

If she's staying inpatient, her insurance company is likely pre-certifying each of her admissions, and also likely re-certifying her need for being inpatient periodically throughout each of her stays.

Health insurance very confused?

We Answered:

You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but, based on the question you are asking, you already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. If it is a "dream" price it is a discount plan it is not insurance.

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company.

If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles and low copays your monthly premiums will be significant.

On the other hand if you are young and healthy and rarely use the health care system why would you want to pay a higher premium every month for a low deductible? You could, instead, consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.

Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation.

Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

You can check out esurance.com

Golden Rule and Humana have good individual plans.

Lastly, if you are in good health, young, nvr go to the dr. are just covering yourself (not a family) then you may want to try a Mini Med Plan it's bascially a plan that will cover a major medical issue and the costs are low.

However, with the above named two ins. carriers you can prob get a good plan for appx. 150.00 per month and will be vary depending on age, smkr, non-smkr, etc..

Why Did All New Individual Children's Health Insurance Policies Suddenly Become Extinct?

We Answered:

That is one of the major problems with this bill. People have to do things the way the law states or they won't be doing it at all. More and more choices are being removed and the cost is going way up and the quality of the policies way down. Those who favor Obamacare only hear the good parts but the refuse to consider the consequences of this bill, and there are many.

Big health insurers to stop selling new child-only policies
Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna Inc. and others say they will make the move as soon as Thursday when parts of the new healthcare law take effect. They cite potentially huge and unexpected costs for insuring children."

They fear that parents will buy it only after their children become sick because they can no longer deny insurance to people with preexisting conditions. It will render them insolvent in short order if that happens on a large scale. It doesn't eliminate those who are already insured. They just won't sell new policies of this type. Remember the law also has removed the limit on liability.

Janice Said:

Enrollment charge for major Health Insurance?

We Answered:

It's doubtful the agent is charging the fee because it is illegal for a commissioned agent to charge fees. Some insurance companies will charge an application fee which is $25 or less. If you are being charged more than $25 you are probably getting a policy from a "questionable" company.
