Mental Health Jobs

Regina Said:

how to find jobs for mental health professional with the government?

We Answered:

Just go to www.usajobs.gov every night and do a quick search for "mental health". I say to do it every night because most of the jobs only stay open for three days in order to keep the applications to a reasonable number. The most opportunities probably exist within the VHA (Veterans Health Administration), but you will find them elsewhere, as well. There are quite a few jobs listed right now, although I don't know if there are any in your area, and many of them are for nurses.

Peruse the site for other information, as well, on how to apply and the various hiring authorities. If you are not a veteran and have never worked for the government before, then you will only be eligible for jobs that are open to all U.S. citizens, so don't waste your time clicking the button that says "show all jobs."

Starting November 1, KSAs (knowledge, skills, abilities), the narrative responses that answer specific questions are not allowed on initial application, so the application process will be easier. In the meantime, you will still have to answer them and send them in.

Good luck.

Mental Health Jobs? Help!?

We Answered:

in general, mental health doesn't pay too well (given the schooling involved). You will need at least a college degree in psychology.

With a BS in Psychology: "Mental Health Technician" or some similar title. Approx 30k a year.
With a MS in Psychology: "Social Worker, or Marriage-Familty Therapist" or some similar title. Approx 45k a year.
With a PsyD or PhD in Psychology: Psychologist. Approx 80k a year.
With a MD in Psychiatry: Psychiatrist. Approx 200k a year.

Salaries can be higher (or lower) depending on setting.

Keith Said:

What causes mental health jobs to be so stressful?

We Answered:

The same thing that makes police officers and psychiatrists one and two on the list of the highest suicide rates per occupation: you are dealing with terrible situations day in and day out and in reality able to do very little about it. Mental health is a sad profession that takes a lot out of you. There is nothing sadder than a totally, pathetically crazy person who doesn't even realize they are crazy. It takes energy; dealing with other people's problems is not easy.
