Ruben Said:

how do I speak to a health insurance agent in TExas?

We Answered:

The key is to find a TX health insurance agent that is independent (meaning that they can work with many different insurance companies).

Be sure that you shop around and compare quotes from at least 3 different insurance companies before you purchase.

Here is some more information on how to choose the best health insurance agent and then also some information specifically on finding the best Texas health insurance:

Shane Said:

is it a legal requirement in Texas to have health insurance?

We Answered:

The only state that currently requires individuals to have health insurance is Massachusetts. The new health reform law will extend that requirement to most other Americans beginning in 2014. Starting in September 2010, however, health reform will allow you to stay on your parents’ health insurance plan until age 26, unless your employer also offers you coverage.

Either way, try not to go without coverage. Health insurance does a lot more than get you access to doctors and hospitals. It also protects your financial future from serious medical expenses that could result from an unexpected illness or injury. If you’re unable to stay on your parents’ plan, you may find that individual health insurance is relatively affordable for people who are young and relatively healthy. Work with a licensed agent, online or off, to find out what your options are when the time comes.

In Texas, Can he really subtract Health Insurance Premiums from the child support he pays? How common is this?

We Answered:

Certainly. If he is supplying support, part of that can be used to fund health insurance.

Does any Texas health insurance company offer coverage for pre-existing conditions?

We Answered:

There are some policies that do not have a pre-existing clause. My health insurance specifically states that there is no pre-existing clause. Most plans will cover pre-existing conditions if you can prove that the same condition was covered by a previous health plan with in a certain amount of time. Some may just have a "waiting" period before they will no longer consider it a pre-existing condition. My advise is to do your research. Don't just choose the cheapest plan because in the long run that may cost you more. Ask about pre-existing exclusions, deductible amounts, and yearly maximums. I see too often in my job where someone has a limited plan and come into the hospital for an emergency stay. The total amount due from the insurance may be $10,000 but their plan may only pay a maximum of $1000 per stay. So now the patient is responsible for the $9000 balance!! Thank goodness the hospital I work for try their best to help patients in this situation by trying to qualify them for charity or setting up reasonable payment plans. Beware of what type of plan you choose and do your research!
