Sophomore in high school? You still have plenty of time! I was in almost my 3rd year of college before I decided what I wanted to do. :)

Virgil Said:

What is a good career to start out in, in the medical field?

We Answered:

Out of your choices, I'd recommend PT Assistant or Radiologic Technologist. They are both stable careers, only require an associate's degree, and make good money. If you would prefer to not work in a hospital, you should do PTA. I'd say it's also probably the less stressful of the two. If you enjoy the fast-paced environment of a hospital, you should do Radiologic Tech.

Why don't you look into job shadowing to help you see which is a better fit for you?

Here are sites for each with great info:

What kinds of medical careers exist?

We Answered:

There are tons of areas of specialization that you can get into. Every doctor goes to university for 4 years, then takes a generalized 3-4 years of medical school, and then they can choose to further specialize in a certain area. I'll think of some and list them for you. If you just take the 8 years of school, without specializing, you can become a GP (General Practitioner), which is basically just a family doctor. With specialization, you'll most likely be in school for 10 years.

Neurologist- "Brain" doctors. Basically deal with the brain and the nervous system.

Opthamologist- Eye doctors.

Pediatrition- A doctor who treats kids.

Podiatrist- "Foot doctors"

Cardiologist- Deals with the heart and circulatory system.

Hematologist- Deals with blood related diseases, such as leukemia and hemophilia.

Gastroenterologist- Deals with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

Immunologist- Deals with immune disorders.

Otorhinolaryngologist - ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders

Radiologist- Deals with CT scans, MRI's, X-ray, etc.

Nephrologist- A doctor that deals with kidney problems.

Urologist- A doctor that deals with the male reproductive system and urinary disorders.

Neonatologist- A doctor that basically works with newborn babies.

Hepatologist- Liver doctor.

Obstetrician- Deals with pregnancies and child birth.

Those are just off the top of my head. There's TONS more. I want to be a pediatric oncologist, or neurosurgeon. Just make sure you keep your options open and get the best marks possible.

Good luck! :)
