Becoming A Doctor

Lucille Said:

What are the pros and cons of becoming a doctor?

We Answered:

Wow, you're asking a lot.

Either you're called to it or you're not. Pros and cons don't really enter into it that much. If you have to be convinced to go into medicine, then don't.

Simple.

Corey Said:

Is it worth becoming a doctor just because i think its cool?

We Answered:

Looking cool is not a great reason to pursue a career in medicine.

There is nothing "cool" about being covered in blood and vomit in the emergency department looking after car crash victims, working a 36 hour shift, being attacked by a drug user whose life you have just saved being ungrateful for ruining their high or telling some parents their child has just died.

Not enjoying chemistry might be a problem as a good pass is required to be able to succeed in physiology and pharmacology, for example.

I really don't know how to address you wanting to "look cool" or think of careers where you can look "cool." Professional surfing? How about becoming a pilot or something? That's fairly cool, I guess.

Christian Said:

Is being a naturopathic doctor a good career?

We Answered:

Hey Razmataz. I am a retired Chiropractor. I work with several local Naturopathic Physicians.

First, you can see from some of the answers, there is a lot of uneducated, negative bias toward Naturopathic Physicians (just as there is towards Chiropractors).

Either profession can open the door to you for advanced, professional training in nutrition. Both professions require 4 years of undergraduate education with appropriate courses in biology, chemistry, physics, math, etc. Both professions require another 4 or more years of training in professional school/colleges. Chiropractors are recognized and licensed in all 50 states, whereas many states do not yet recognize and license Naturopaths.

I encourage you to contact the admissions offices of several accredited colleges in both professions to explore the pros and cons of each for yourself. Both professions can be challenging, but rewarding.

Best wishes and good luck.

Javier Said:

What are the fastest programs to becoming a doctor?

We Answered:

That is actually a few more years than just 2 after med school as that would be a fellowship on top of a general residency (so more like 5+ years). ANd no one wants to be seen by some one "fast tracked" through med school. Med school is 4 years because there is too much to learn. Don't want you to miss out on something critical.

Donna Said:

WHAT ARE THE FULL STEPS TO BECOMING a DOCTOR?

We Answered:

Take physiology, anatomy, biology, microbiology, and chemistry subjects in high school. Enter a pre-med course in college, graduate, then take the entrance exam for medicine. There are different fields: dental medicine, veterinary medicine, decide which one you want. Doctors do not 'major', they specialize. As to which school, again it depends on what kind of doctor you want to be.

Becoming Doctor to Serve in the Military?

We Answered:

Keep trying. The only problem with a medical condition in the military is that there may be no one available to take care of you if you have a problem, that's why they won't let you join. But Asthma isn't necessarily that much of a problem unless you have it really bad. You may get by it but keep trying.
