How Much Do Medical Assistants Get Paid? (10 points for best or most acurrate answer)? We Answered:
What an MA will make varies greatly, and, for new graduates, is mostly dependent on location. In most major metropolitan areas, there are too many MA programs, thus there are too many graduates. In many of the top 30 US metropolitan areas, less than 50% of the graduates find a job coming out of the programs. And in those areas due to the large applicant pool available, the wages are kept low. In many areas the MA pay rate is slightly over minimum wage. This does not make the cost of the tuition worthwhile. Also for the greatest number of MAs this ends up being a short-term occupation. They get frustrated with the low wages and move into another area of health care, or out of health care entirely.
Also consider that, it is not required in any of the 50 US state that an MA have been through any formal training program, or be certified, registered or licensed. For this reason, in some of the smaller clinics, physicians will frequently hire family members and train them to perform the required tasks. Or the office manager will have their family members on the staff. (This is not uncommon, and has been the case in 2 clinics I have worked with.)
Wages will range from $8.90 to $18.50 an hour.; But the areas with the higher rates usually are the areas with the higher costs of living.
The national average for an MA is less than $14 per hour, and that includes experienced MAs.
