Career In Healthcare

Julian Said:

is there a healthcare career that takes care of all ailments?

We Answered:

Psychiatrists would be the closest thing. I have seen them do wonders when no other doctor could help. I really respect them, and it's too bad there's still a stigma about "shrinks." It is getting better though.

As for you, maybe a scientist? Discover a cure for each ailment, one at a time. :( Sorry, that's the best I can do! -LL

What career in healthcare would you recommend to me?

We Answered:

Take a look at a Masters and Doctorate in Public Health. To my understanding, the options (areas of study/careers) are fairly endless in this field.

You might want to do a Myers - Briggs test to find out exactly what your interests are. A dentist and a vet are pretty different, so you should be sure of what you want to do vs. just choosing something that seems fun.

You might consider an MD/Ph D program as well. You can be a doctor and you can do research. Just another thought; however, it is VERY hard to get into these programs.

In general, you should also have some hobbies or volunteer experience on your resume that isn't science related - shows your diverse.

Oh, and check out the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. They are AWESOME. They have many programs, some of which you can work and take masters level courses for free. Then, those who work can get into the doctoral programs with a little more ease than just applying from the outside.

Good luck to you!

How do I transition from teaching to a healthcare career?

We Answered:

Many HMO's have teachers on staff that 'teach' (big use of the word) diabetes classes, weight loss, addiction, etc. etc. Not sure if you could convince them to use your skill as a teach while you learn the subject matter, but you never know...

The other option would be to go the med tech route and go to school at night to become a specialized tech. Since you have college degree, you may also be able to tack on an MBA with emphasis on Health Care Administration. (Best option, but not cheap...)

will Healthcare Career Explorers post look good on a college transcript?

We Answered:

I would think so. The website I found about it says they charge a fee to join. Though it is minimal, other exploring programs don't charge a membership fee. This also may vary from different locations. I'm in Law Enforcement Exploring, it's the same thing as you're interested in, but for police work instead of medical work. I know that enrollment in LE Explorers puts you at a greater eligibility to become employed at a police department, and I'm sure anything on a college transcript that shows your interest in the field would help.

How can I start a career in Healthcare?

We Answered:

I would first look at the APTA website at www.apta.org so you can get an idea of what PT school entails.

Your next step would be to start taking the courses required for entrance into the program to which you hope to apply. Presumably, you will have to take a lot of the sciences that you did not get as a business major.

As you near the completion of those courses, complete any volunteer hours that are required and take the GRE if required.

A job as a PT technician would fulfill your observation hours..although it does not pay much...but a good experience for someone hoping to become a PT.

Discuss It!
