Career In Medical Field

Raymond Said:

How can I use my MBA degree to transfer over to the medical career field?

We Answered:

The administration areas of hospitals often use MBAs for the business issues. Many also get hospital administration or Health Care Administration degrees, but not all.

Harold Said:

I am thinking of becoming a graphic designer? is this a good career field? I am in the medical field currently

We Answered:

Very, very tough and competitive field.

There are lots of jobs out there for professional graphics people, but not many for actual design. Most of them involve meatball work: Laying out printing jobs, etc. You will need to be fluent in at least one raster based program (ie, Photoshop) and one vector based program (ie, Illustrator). If you get into print pre-flight stuff, you will need to know QuarkXpress as well.

My opinion is that you will make more money and have an easier time doing it in the medical field. However, you have to like your job, so if graphics is calling, go for it. Just make sure you have your eyes open.

Eugene Said:

Which career field pays more? Medical billing and coding or Medical office assistant?

We Answered:

I am an instructor in CA. I teach medical front office assisting and medical billing and coding.

Usually medical billing and coding pays better and has an even better demand than front office assisting. Starlight has an excellent point about researching whether or not employers will hire graduates of that school. Find out which schools they do like.

If you want to go for the money, as long as Obama-care doesn't change things too much, the best thing to study is hospital coding. Look up job postings and find out what their requirements are. Hospital coding is likely to keep increasing as the baby boomers continue to age.

If you want to have your own business eventually, you can study either physician and/or hospital billing. Keep in mind though it can take a while to break into the industry because of course they all want experience. Ironically some of my medical billing and coding students initially get hired on as a front office assistant because they know the billing stuff already.

What is the 4n0 (aerospace med) career field equivalent to in the civilian world?

We Answered:

Your best bet would be to go to your base Medical Group and ask around. People love to brag about their jobs, especially Medical Group.

Ben Said:

Should I volunteer about health when i want to study about health career or medical field after high school,WA?

We Answered:

Yep, you should volunteer. A) It gives you that much more of an edge over others. There is no substitute for experience. B) It will also give you the chance to get into the field and pick the other workers' brains about the industry. Maybe they'll be able to give you direction or insight you otherwise might have missed.

As for college the more extracurricular activities you have directly related to your chosen field, the better. A future job recruiter probably doesn't care that you're a world class tuba player but DOES care that you've taken the time to supplement your formal education with practical and real world experience somewhere. It could tip the scales in your favor.

As for length, it all depends on if you enjoy the volunteer activity and it isn't interfering with your life otherwise. Don't let it consume all your free time or get in the way of school. By that same token, look around for somewhere/something you actually have an interest in and WANT to learn more about, or a place you actually want to spend some free time. If you're forcing yourself to do it then probably it isn't the right choice for what you want out of a career.

I can tell you that while I was in the Peace Corps it definitely helped the Health Volunteers to have past volunteer work on their application.
