Career Medical Officer

Jimmie Said:

If you enlisted in one career, and became an officer in another, can you get recalled to your old field?

We Answered:

Not likely. If the government spent training and money on you to do an officer's job, that's the job you're paid to do.

Norma Said:

Can a CHP officer attend medical school?

We Answered:

Yes

Michael Said:

USAF medical officer careers?

We Answered:

Very few, if any, medical officers collect blood. This is done primarily by enlisted personell.

Donald Said:

USAF medical. enlisted -vs- officer?

We Answered:

the first post the order backwards.
just being an officer doesnt mean that you'll get trained as a doctor. IF you are a doctor or a PA or a surgeon then the air force will make you an officer. i'm not sure if the air force has enlisted medical personel like medics or wahtever. if they have LPNs i cant see those being officers, they're enlisted in the army.

What do medical officers in the Armed Forces do?

We Answered:

Both the previous answers have been for the US Army. Despite your question obviously being British our colonial cousins just can't seem to help themselves. All they will do is confuse you with acronyms that don't actually exist in the British Army!

An MO, well basically you could end up with a battalion or a regiment and you are their GP. Alternatively you may work at a larger garrison practise (equivalent to a large practise or health centre. You deploy on operations and will work in Field Hospitals/Ambulances. As for the pay. I have no idea what a civi quack earns, for our latest pay scales have a look at our website www.armyjobs.mod.uk

It is also worth noting that if you qualify as a doctor, then you are classed as a PQO (professionally qualified Officer) so you do approx 4 weeks at Sandhurst and commision straight to Captain as opposed to 2nd Lieutenant.

There are also medical bursaries available. ask at your nearest careers office or on the on-line office for details. Good Luck whatever you decide!

Alfred Said:

How long does it take to became a medical corps officer in the Army?

We Answered:

Medical Corps Officers are Physicians, and military physicians in any branch have the same education as civilian physicians.

So consider the education: 4 years undergraduate study; 4 years medical school; then another 2 to 6 years for internship/residency depending on what area of medicine you wish to specialize in.

The military has a medical school. See:
http://www.usuhs.mil/

From what I understand, the military's med school is more difficult to get into than civilian med school. I hear this from the doctors who have graduated from the school, so consider the source. If you can get in, though, it is quite a deal because you will be paid a salary while learning, get your MD on the taxpayer's dime, and then required to serve so many years in return. Also, there are a handful of financial assistance programs that the Army has to offer to qualified candidates attending civilian med schools. Good luck to you. The Army always has room for physicians in the ranks!
