Is anyone doing the Career Step (medical transcription) program or did it?We Answered:
Career Step is not a scam. They are a legitimate online school. Did you choose the medical transcription editing program? If not you can always add it on to your current program- but what it is is learning how to medical transcription editing which is how the job of the medical transcriptionist may evolve. With the use of speech recognition software, there are still mistakes that will need to be edited. And trained people will need to fill these jobs. So if you are worried about the work of a medical transcriptionist "dying", look into editing. Also, not all hospitals and doctors are using this type of software and there are still a lot of bugs to work out so transcriptionists are still in demand. And another thing you will want to look into is Career Step's graduate services. After you graduate, they will give you a personal consultation with an employment advisor, access to employment and referral directories, contracts and pricing guide (so you can negotiate better), personalized interview tutorials and training, and they will review your resume and cover letter and give you tips. There are some companies that they partner with that will only hire their graduates. And finally, they currently have an online webinar about where the jobs are: http://careerstep.com/webinar/?uid=ref11… Another resource is the department of labor. They have stats on how in demand medical transcriptionists are as well as pay and nature of the work. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htmHope this info is helpful!

Has anyone heard of career step for medical transcription? We Answered:
Career Step is an excellent school. My sister-in-law actually took their course and she really liked it. There is a lot of real doctor dictation to go through and practice with. They also teach you ways to type faster (keyboard shortcuts, etc) which is good since MTs are paid by production. And they are the only school that I have found that also offers medical transcription editing. It is a tough course but it really prepares you for the job. She said that the people there were really helpful. They help you with your resume, give you interview tips and advice, and give you employment and referral directories. They have a lot of relationships with medical transcription employers so you kinda already have an in with those employers. As far as the course, they have games like crossword puzzles and things to make learning more interesting. Overall she really liked the course. Have you taken the demo of their course where you can see what it is like and what subjects they cover? That might help you decide if you would like it or not. You can view the demo here: http://careerstep.com/demo/?uid=ref11431 If you are looking for some discount codes, I found some on this website http://bestmedicaltranscriptiontraining.…As far as pay, according to the department of labor, the average median wage was $15.41 in 2008.
Good luck!

Has anyone taken the Career Step Medical Transcription Program? Thoughts? We Answered:
I've taken the Career Step course. I recommend it to everyone - friends, family, strangers.I signed up for the course 5 years ago. I received a job offer less than a week after graduating. I work from home as a Medical Transcriptionist and have NEVER stepped into an office.
I recently wrote a blog post on Career Step and whether it was a scam or legit. I'll add the link below.
Career Step is an AHDI approved program and they are partnered with many of the major MT employers. In other words, their graduates get the jobs. Many companies require 2-3 years experience, however, a lot of these companies will waive this requirement if you graduate from the right school.
I recommend CS because they are partnered with MANY employers, self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than many of the other AHDI-approved programs. Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program. Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online 'approved' course is the way to go. Choosing the right school is so important! They do offer financial aid and payment plans. :)

Career Step Medical Transcription Course? We Answered:
I completed the CareerStep course, and I have been a Medical Transcriptionist for 2 years now. I really liked the course because it was so thorough and easy to follow at the same time. It's a learn then practice structure which works really well. After the course, to find a job, I received assistance from the CareerStep counselors and my peers on the CareerStep forums. The forum is invaluable for learning about companies and employment. I tested with a company a week after graduating and received an offer a week later. That's how you go about finding an online MT job by taking a company's online employment test. Here are some links to employment tests for some examples:http://www.sten-tel.com/terms_confirmation.asp?Type=MT
http://www.accentus.ca/application.html
http://spheris.com/careers/medical-transcriptionist-positions.php
but as for working on-site, from what I understand it's the same process except you go to the hospital or clinic and they administer the test in person.

Do you need to have a career diploma to do medical or other transcription work from home?We Answered:
You do not need to have a diploma to do medical transcription from your home. There are legit schools: Andrews and careerstep courses are ones that are at the top of the list. They will also help you get a job. These are legit schools and do cost to take these courses. They are at your own pace courses.
MT work is done from home on a production basis. You can make money if you work you butt off. Can you type fast? You can probably also take a Health information management course at a community college to get some ideas. You will need to take a terminology class, anatomy and physiology class, typing classes, computer program classes like word, excel, access.
People that have never done MT work have no idea what it is you have to put into it. It is not "just a stay at home job". It is a real job. It takes hours a day to put in your 1000 lines or whatever your line count is you need per day. LIne counts are counted by 65-character lines either with or without spaces. Yes, you are paid by how much you time.
If you see these places that say work at home seminar and such, these couple of hour seminars will get you no where. Not one legit transcription company will pay you to work there. Your pay rate starting off can be anywhere from 4 cents to 8 cents per line. Very rarely is there a company that will pay you more than that especially starting off.
My suggestion is to go to the CareerStep website. Read the information. (Say careerstep because I took some of this course). They are friendly, have support sites, forums, and on and on. They also have a billing course if you prefer that.
Good luck.
