Careers In Health

Bobbie Said:

Calling all Psychiatrists and anyone in mental health careers?

We Answered:

First of all, to become a Psychiatrist, U must first become a medical doctor. That takes about 5 years..then theres Internship in a Hospital and continuing studies into Psychiatry, which take a few more years. So, U are looking at..at least 5 to 8/9 years for good qualifications.
Once U get there, U can put away the Stethoscope and the medical equipment and settle for a "business" type office. Then U listen to other peoples problems, AND: keep in mind (your mind)
that the person sitting opposite U may be potentially very dangerous. They don't all come to u for marital advice...Some even come with guns and knives>>I KID U NOT. U must develop an attitude of CARING/Understanding and Patience..be able to speak to Patients in a manner they understand, for the type of complaint they may have. U must understand yourself and have the patient understand FULLY that "rome was not built in a day"..in other words, some mental illnesses take time to cure..some can NEVER be cured. U listen and U must also take into consideration the patients closest relatives and friends, their workplace etc. IF their "problem" could possibly be dangerous to others by their actions. U must delve deep into their minds, looking for signs of any possible attempt at Suicide. AND: at the end of the Day, U go home and sink a few coldies into U
(or whatever u prefer) BECAUSE U have had a stressful day..AND< STRESS in this type of JOB is what U must be prepared to have as a PARTNER always.
Oh, and one thing many people forget about Psychiatrist IS that they also are Humans.
Subject to FEELINGS and ILLNESSes like anyone else.

OH, and IF U do get to Private Practice, make sure the walls of the office are painted brightly..U will need "something" to make your day bright because the Job WON'T.
Its a PARTICULAR Field, and u need to have a Passion for it, the same way as a woman wants to become a Nun, U can reneg your Vows..your Oath, but it will always be a part of your Life and the lives of others around U.So, if marrying, your partner needs to FULLY understand the she/he is going to become part of, or involved in, that Professional career also. Its NOT all negative, but its not a "walk in the park" also.

Nurse practicioner, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, and audiologist are the primary ones that come to mind in terms of post graduate education, but I would say they most often make a similar pay scale.
