Doctor Career Information

Seth Said:

Doctor career information?

We Answered:

At some point, you'll need to start volunteering in some sort of medical setting. Hospitals are ALWAYS looking for volunteers.

Your high school grades and resume will get you into a good 4 year college. Doing well in a good 4 year college (and a good resume and good MCAT scores) will get you into a good med school. Doing well in at a good med school will get you into a good residency program. A good residency program can help you get a good job.

Sit down with your counselor at school and speak with them about your goals.

Military wife wanting to pursue A career as a doctor or nurse?

We Answered:

I assume by "doctor" you mean a physician and "nurse" a registered nurse. Either could allow you to travel and not own a practice. The greatest difference would be the long-time initial training requirement to become a physician: four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school followed by your residency. During the final two components would would have to stay put during those years.

Possible options could be to work as a "hospitalist" physician (since they usually are employed directly by a hospital), an emergency room physician or a pathologist to name a few.

A nursing degree will take four years to complete and if you choose an advance practice field an additional 2-3 years.

Both physician and nurse licenses are issued by states so in either case you will have to apply for a new license to practice in whichever state you go. However, that is usually pro-forma since most states have reciprocity with other states for those licenses.

An exception to the license requirement is if you are employed by a Defense Department Hospital/Healthcare facility or the VA you might not have to get a new license if you move from state to state. I do not recall that any longer but i know there was some type exception in the past.

Good luck!
