How To Become A Phlebotomist

Stanley Said:

How do you become a phlebotomist?

We Answered:

They're certified in some states, not in other states. It depends on your state.

Usually, it's either a short academic program (you should have already taken most of those courses in nursing school) or is taught OJT by lab techs. It's not "a degree" - it's usually one semester long.

Instead of the phlebotomist function, have you considered a position as an ER Tech or a Med/Surg Unit Secretary - they pay better and don't require much (if any) additional training for you.

How do I become a phlebotomist in Florida?

We Answered:

Look at the local technical colleges. Most of them will have a program that should take a semester or two, including clinical experience. Technical schools are pretty flexible with hours, so taking it at night shouldn't be a problem.

Does anyone know how much it is to become a phlebotomist?

We Answered:

It all depends. You'll have to go to community college websites in your area and look up their phlebotomist programs. The costs should be listed right on the website; if not, I would be suspicious of the school. Employers often train people to be phlebotomists, too for free; you might ask local hospitals, blood banks, and the Red Cross as to whether they do this.

How do I become a Phlebotomist in California?

You're thinking just Phlebotomy? Maybe something else? There are a great many number of things you can do, that are fast, and can get you into the Healthcare.

Phlebotomy is great because it doesn't take long (you have to take a state regulated class that consists of 40 hours of class time, 40 hours of practice, with at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures, pass the exam, apply for certification and pay the fees), the license is good for 2 years, and you can work at so many different places.

There are 3 different types of Phlebotomists: Limited Phlebotomy Technician: Authorized to do skin puncture blood collection only, Certified Phlebotomy Technician I: Authorized to do venipuncture and skin punctures, and Certified Phlebotomy Technician II: Authorized to do venipuncture, arterial puncture and skin punctures. (I've put the website below about schools in CA that offer these classes)

(Go to the bottom, use the link and open/print/save the information)

As for other ideas, you could look into CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) which is very versitile, helpful and gets your foot in the door for many things, MA (Medical Assistant) which is great to have (Most places make it manditory to have your Certification before you start working as a Medical Assistant), Dental Hygenist/Assistant (Courses for that don't take long either), Medical Transcriptionist (Courses usally last three terms in length and help you get the appropriate licensing afterwards).

Good luck with your new job search. Hope this helped!

Most community colleges with a health science department will offer this training.

There are several free online services that help you find a school that is already accepting students with your credentials. My favorite is College Matchmaker, from the College Board company. Go to that website, enter your personal information and SAT or ACT scores, tell them where [State or area or even by zip code] you want to go to college and what majors you may be interested in - Phlebotomy in your case, and see what comes up.
