How To Choose A Medical Career
Sara Said:
what medical career should i choose? midwife? nurse or radiographer? We Answered:
Take a step back first and note that you are having to resit the 2 main subjects that a medical student needs- Chemistry and Biology. It's correct that every medical school wants A's in these subjects, some will accept B's however. But, something you need to know is that a lot of universities offering medical degrees will not accept students who have had to resit. This is because they follow the opinion that if you didn't get it right the first time then you're not skilled enough. However, some will accept resits if you can really prove you've gotten the grade well enough- so there is still hope! Just make sure to double check before applying that you can use resit grades.
Personally I'd look at what you're like as a person. Midwifery always sounds like a lovely career doesn't it? Helping bring beautiful little babies into the world! But, you need to be aware that it's not all cute little babies. You'll have to deal with women screaming in agony, you'll have to deal with a heck of a lot of blood and other unpleasant fluids coming out of her and you may have to be prepared to deal with the pain of delivering still born babies or having babies that don't quite make it. If you're sure you can deal with all these, then go for it! My friend's mother does it and she says it's an amazing career. And, think about it, we're always going to have pregnant women giving birth, so we're always going to need midwives!
Radiography is one I unfortunately don't know much about, so I can be of little help to you in that area. Make sure you research it fully before making a decission and ask if there's anywhere you can do a bit of work experience following a radiographer around for a few days. Medical schools look very highly at people who have had experience in hosptitals
Good luck!
