be careful when considering medical assisting. at most respectable medical establishments the only job medical assistants can do is filing. my friend went through a whole two year program for it and the only places that would hire him to do actual medical work was low paying clinics int he slums.

I took medical assisting back in 2007 now its 2010, and i'm still without a job. So that should tell you something right there. Medical assisting used to be in demand but not anymore, its only in demand for medical assistants with experience in the field. So if your going into this please have a place set up that will hire you otherwise withdraw from the program. You will have more of a chance gaining employment as a CNA then you will a medical assistant. Medical assisting pays minimum wage or a few dollars above it, there are ways of making it work but it would be difficult. I don't mean to be a debbie downer but this is just the reality I have come to see.

I have been a CNA for 32 years, and it is a good job, but you have rude people in every aspect of your life and that can't be avoided. Try to deal with that, and also don't get too attached to the patients or residents. I started back in the 70's when you didn't have mechanical lifts to help the patients shower or get into a standing position, so it was pretty hard on your back. Today, you don't lift as much so it's not so physically demanding.

I think it is a good career...anything in the health field is good especially through the economic crisis..I am taking online classes for medical transcription, medical claims and billing, medical and dental assistant..but I think it would be good to eventually further my career to maybe a RN...good luck!
