Jobs For Medical Students

Johnnie Said:

Do you believe medical schools are doing inadequate jobs on choosing students?

We Answered:

couldn't agree more.

Shane Said:

Do medical students have time for jobs outside of school?

We Answered:

Some people do it, but they don't usually work too many hours...it's not so much a matter of study time, but rather sheer number of class hours or time spent on the wards. At my school, for instance, we were literally in class or lab from 9am to 5-6pm every day....the schedule is a little lighter now, in that sometimes we get out at 3-4pm. And once you're on the wards, not only are the hours intense but your schedule is constantly changing, so any job you have has to be incredibly flexible.

Because of all that, many people don't work....when you compare the relatively piddling amount of money you can make with a very-part time job with the potential impact on your grades/studying, most people decide that an extra 1-2K in loans is worth the extra 10-15 hours of study/sanity time.

Also, keep in mind that for many specialties, they expect to see extracurriculars, research, volunteer work, or whatnot during med school, and not many people can do all that, work, and get excellent grades.....and so more broadly, you have to compare the worth of a part time job with getting into the specialty and program of your choice. Most people pick long-term career over short-term financial crunch.

Helen Said:

What jobs are available for the students who just completed medical school without any residency?

We Answered:

There aren't any medical jobs available to a new MD. Although you have earned your degree, you do not have a license. Your first license to practice is provided under the aegis of your residency program and is only valid while your are in training, meaning you can't start practicing medicine independently from that program.

The value of a MD degree only comes after you are board certified in a specialty. There are many foreign educated physicians working in non-medical jobs because they are unable to pass the USMLE (a few years ago there was a news report of the number of Indian physician cab drivers).

The bottom line is that a person who has completed medical school is expected to immediately enter a residency program. Doing anything else makes no sense and about the only reason a person would be in that situation is because they could not get into any residency...and that sends the worst message.
