Medical School and Financial Aid?

We Answered:

Your situation is not at all unusual. I would recommend that you stay the course and finish your Finance major, which is an excellent non-science major for medical school. If you still have the desire to pursue medicine, a Post Bacc program is, in my opinion, the best way to go. In a Post-Bacc, you only have to take the pre-reqs, which allows you to focus just on those, which will improve your GPA and ultimately, your MCAT score.

By the time you're finished with medical school, you'll probably be over $200K in debt. That's not unusual, either. That may seem overwhelming, but the average physician retires the student loan debt in 7 years and it's very common for a new grad to be offered a loan repayment program by an employer, be it a HMO, group practice or hospital.

Medical Technologists: In which school did u study, what's ur specialty & how much did you pay 4 ur certific8?

We Answered:

I'm glad you're interested in this field. Because of a growing shortage of Medical Technologists, it is currently a very in demand profession. Although, it does require a lot of preparation to pass the MLS (ASCP) board certification exam.

MTs must have at least a BS degree in medical technology or one of the life sciences before sitting for the MLS (ASCP) exam. The best way to prepare for the certification exam is to complete a one year NAACLS accredited program or clinical internship in medical technology. These programs can be used as the senior year for students in a medical technology degree program ("3+1" route) or taken as a post-baccalaureate internship ("4+1" route). Because they are also internships, Most schools of medical technology, you'll be happy to hear, have no tuition aside from the cost of books and other supplies. They are typically one year in length and consist of a combination of rotations through a medical laboratory under actual hospital or clinical conditions (16-24 hours a week) and lectures (16-24 hours a week) in hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, mycology, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood bank), and sometimes genetics. Although you are working for the laboratory during your rotations, there is no salary. Likewise, there is no tuition (effectively, no monetary exchange). This is the traditional structure that these programs are designed around in the US. But, if you looked I'm sure you'd find some that offer some sort of stipend that may require tuiton payments.

The typical salary range for Medical Technologists (also known as Clinical or Medical laboratory scientists) is $40K to $70K in the US (usually $40K to $50K starting out and as high as $80K to $100K in areas with higher costs of living like southern California).

Wilma Said:

how much does a nurses aid make after becoming certified by the state?

We Answered:

Median hourly earnings of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants were $10.67 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $9.09 and $12.80 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $7.78, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $14.99 an hour.

High replacement needs for nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides reflect modest entry requirements, low pay, high physical and emotional demands, and limited opportunities for advancement within the occupation. For these same reasons, the number of people looking to enter the occupation will be limited. Many aides leave the occupation to attend training programs for other health care occupations. Therefore, people who are interested in, and suited for, this work should have excellent job opportunities.

Opportunities for advancement within these occupations are limited. Aides generally need additional formal training or education to enter other health occupations. The most common health care occupations for former aides are licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, and medical assistant.

Dana Said:

Is there financial aid available to do medical transcription from an online school?

We Answered:

It depends on the school. Financial Aid can get a little complicated with online schools, but there are plenty that are authorized to offer a variety of Federal and State financial aid programs. Of course, other schools aren't. Generally, when a school DOES offer financial aid, they will say so. If getting Financial Aid is really important to you, consider "shopping around" for an online college until you find one that definitely offers financial aid. Make sure you give them a call to find out how to qualify (i.e. if you have to take a certain number of classes, etc.).

If the school you want to attend isn't eligible to offer federal financial aid, you might still be able to borrow a private loan to cover your cost of attendance. What you need to look for is a "career" loan. Try any of these:
