Both jobs, and they are jobs not careers, regardless of what the tv commercials say, pay minimum wage to start, increasing to maybe $10 an hour after years of work. If you are going to go to school anyway, I suggest training to be an actual nurse. They make exceptional money.

This would allow you to get a low paying health care job, but would not be very beneficial towards a goal of being a physician. It would be better to work towards a health care service occupation which provides some level of clinical knowledge. An example would be EMT then possibly Paramedic. The skills performed by these occupations are more directly clinical as opposed to a medical assistant which performs at a much less involved support level. In my opinion, except for the ability to have a job, the time spent learning and working as a medical assistant would be mostly a waste of time. Also, if you have the abilities which would enable you to be a physician, then a medical assistant course and the job would bore you quickly. Additionally, you can make more money in most cities working at a restaurant.

I am a college counselor so I hope to help you out. What else in the medical field where you wanting to get into? I know that some people who work at a medical office for many years as a medical assistant can eventually become the office manager if the opportunity presents itself. Usually those who get that certificate, stay as a medical assistant.

My mom made the decision to go into the medical field about 6 years ago, she's a certified ma. She makes decent to poverty level like 28000 a year. She works in a hospital and thats the mistake she made. She gets to do all the grimey work. If you do plan on going in this field, dont work at a hospital. Work for a doctors office or nursing home. They pay more and you don;t have to do all the dirty work. As for my mom she is paying the bills, She bought a nice house and car, and she basically makes enough to pay the bills. No more than that. lol...I know how you feel and I always wanted to get feedback whenever I wanted to go into a field. It can be the decision of your life. Sleep on it.
