Debra Said:

Do students in a Medical Assisting program get drug tested?

We Answered:

Medical assists are subject to random drug testing. If drug use is detected, you could be kicked out of the program. It is just not while you are in school either. Once on the job, you will be subjected to random drug testing too. Get caught, you are out of a job. Drug tests now can detect marijuana use within the last 90 days; no mater how much water, vinegar, or green tea you drink. Same goes for eating a lot of poppy seeds - won't fool the drug test.

James Said:

Courses you have to take in a Medical Assisting Program?

We Answered:

In addition to A & P and medical terminology, MA programs usually cover phlebotomy (drawing blood), ekg (electrocardiogram) tech, urinalysis/lab testing procedures, administrative office tasks which may include answering phones and making appointments, machine transcription and such.

Please be cautioned that there aren't supposed to be too many jobs for the MA (or medical biller or coder) despite what those private $$ career/tech schools proclaim. With the numerous training programs available, the field is saturated. MA graduates have also said how frustrating it is that most jobs require the person to have 1-2 years experience in the field to possibly be considered for the job.

If still interested in the field, please consider the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

With schooling, please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (may have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, capella, anthem, sanford brown, ashford, high-tech/allied school, university of phoenix, argosy, career step, devry, strayer, US career, ITT tech, kaplan, ashworth, walden, colorado tech, everest, remington and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may Not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com

Does anyone reccomend or not reccomend Everst Institutes Medical Assisting program?

We Answered:

Everest Institute is not accredited with the CAAHP. You should to go the AAMA website and look under their accredited school and def take classes at one of them so that you can go for your CMA.

Kevin Said:

What kind of things do they do in the medical assisting program at everest institute.?

We Answered:

You should receive a syllabus as well as a lab check off. You learn : ear wash , eye wash, vision exam, autoclaving, bandaging, hearing tests, med dosages, setting up sterile trays, assisting & draping, vital signs, EKGs, finger sticks for glucose, hemoglobin, charting, etc. 2 modules are about front office procedures (computers, ledgers, booking etc) and 2 mods are anatomy & pathophysiology (disease). You learn about cells, the skeleton, etc. Hard depends entirely on you.
