I did a billing and coding certificate program at my local community college. I was working full time and only went to school at night and got done in about 8 months. My program was split up so we didn't learn billing and coding at the same time. I think coding was the first semester and then you did billing after that. I really enjoyed my program, even though I was working full time (and drove an hour to get to the school, at the time they were the only school offering the program) I didn't feel overwhelmed.

My certificate has served me well, I got certified (CPC) and now have a great job as a federal employee.

Hey Beat,

The cost of online medical billing training programs and schools differ greatly in price and that is mostly attributed to what the course consists of, the time it will take to complete, what they award you with once the course is complete (certificate/certification/degree) and lastly a services they provide you with after the course is complete (resume assistance, job searches, apprenticeship, etc.)

I have seen courses range from $1K – as high as $4,200. I own a medical billing and transcription business and I tell those that ask me not to take an online course that is less than $600 and no more than $2,000 unless you are actually learning two or more of the professions (billing-coding, coding-transcription or billing-coding-transcription).

There are several things that one must consider when researching/evaluating online medical billing courses and while I can't go into them here because of time limitations I will give you the link to a website that does a superb job of breaking it all down in easy to understand language (link is after my name below).

From what I understand, in order to do this for a living you need to be certified, and then to maintain your certification, you need continuing education credits, or CEUs.

There does not appear to be any freestanding DVD courses to refresh your knowledge. I suspect there is too much money to be made with courses offered through fromal schools and institutes.

A neighbor does this for a living working from home and all her CEUs and refreshers come to her through her employer.
