Medical Billing Careers From Home

Teresa Said:

can medical billing and coding be done online from home?

We Answered:

Some medical coders and billers work from home but it is not as common as medical transcription. Usually a medical coder is able to work from home after a year or so of proving themselves in the office- that is if the company allows you to work from home. Most likely hospitals will not allow you to work from home. The only employer that I know of that allows their employees to work from home is AviaCode. They are out of Salt Lake CIty, UT. As with medical transcription, medical coding and billing requires training. The school I suggested for your medical transcription question also offers medical coding and billing training online.

What is medical billing? What does the career involve?

Medical billing is an integral part of the health care industry. Without it, doctors would have a hard time getting paid for their services. Medical billing specialists submit claims to insurance companies to facilitate payments for services provided to patients. It is a complete process that starts when the patient visits a doctor’s office.

Some medical billing services include:

* Gathering patient information and billing detail from physicians
* Submitting details to insurance companies for payment
* Applying knowledge of various billing procedures, fee schedules, collection methods and claims form completion
* Processing responses from health insurance companies
* Preparing invoices and contacting patients about past-due bills

Joyce Said:

medical billing from someones home vs. a billing firm?

We Answered:

my personal opinion is that unless I really, really trusted the person whose home I would be working in, I would much prefer to work in a legitimate, organized company. Or if you proceed to work for this person, I would draft up a contract of some sort to ensure you get paid.

As far as your career goes, if you are doing the work and getting the experience, any future employer will probably not care where you worked, as long as you had the knowledge and certification.
